Diocesan budget
Meetings to use innovative discussion process
In order to ensure we have as much dialogue and input as possible in the diocesan budgeting process, three meetings are scheduled in different parts of the state. They are:
  • Tuesday, August 18, St. Mark's Cathedral, Minneapolis
  • Thursday, August 20, Christ Episcopal Church, Grand Rapids
  • Tuesday, August 25, Cathedral of Our Merciful Saviour, Faribault
Each meeting will begin promptly at 7 pm and end at 9 pm. The meeting on August 18 will be webcast live via the diocesan website. Comments will be enabled throughout the live event and, as much as possible, submitted to the conversation as it occurs. In addition, a podcast will be created from this webcast for later viewing.

The process for the three budget hearings for our diocese is based on the model used for finance hearings at the recent General Convention of the Episcopal Church. At General Convention, the budget was divided into 3 broad budget categories, Mission Priorities, Spending, and Funding, each of which were assigned specific timeframes for consideration. Within each timeframe, individuals were allotted two minutes to address the committee with concerns, priorities, or questions. Feedback on this process was that it felt extremely open and that sharing happened in a respectful and orderly manner.

With this as a template, the Diocesan Finance Committee proposes a similar process to help the Diocese of Minnesota have the necessary discussions in advance of our Convention. The diocesan budget has been broken down into two broad categories: expense and revenue. Each of the upcoming three meetings will include specified time periods for conversation about both categories.  As with General Convention, participants will have 2 minutes to present their thoughts or questions for consideration. (see agenda for full details). Read the full article on the website...

Mission Strategy Network (MSN)
MSN update
submitted by James Huber, MSN co-chair
The Rev. Dr. Craig Van Gelder, the BCMS and MSN consultant from Luther Seminary for the past four years is now on sabbatical and no longer the MSN consultant. Additionally, the work of the MSN is continuing with the Rev. Dr. Anne Miner-Pearson as the project consultant. She is in process of contacting leadership from Congregations across Minnesota. MSN leaders will be available for Fall regional meetings to discuss MSN progress thus far and the mission based resolution for Diocesan Convention. Diocesan Council has joined the MSN in sponsoring the resolution. The Rev. Daniel Pearson and I continue to co-chair the MSN.
Bishop's Circle
ritchie two bulls Funds used to support student justice projects
Thanks to funding provided by the 2007 Bishop's Circle Funds for College Ministry, All Saints Church, Northfield, offered students at Carleton and St. Olaf Colleges an opportunity to submit proposals for "Contemplation and Action Grants for Social Justice Projects." Besides providing funding for social justice endeavors, the students whose proposals were successful prepared for their projects spiritually through prayer and contemplation.  Read about each student's project here.
