August meetings planned for Minneapolis, Grand Rapids, Faribault submitted by Joseph Dusek, Treasurer In order to ensure we have
as much dialogue and input as possible in the diocesan budgeting process, three meetings are scheduled in different parts of the state. They are:
Tuesday, August 18, St. Mark's Cathedral, Minneapolis
Thursday, August 20, Christ Episcopal Church, Grand Rapids
Tuesday, August 25, Cathedral of Our Merciful Saviour, Faribault
Each meeting will begin promptly at 7 pm and end at 9 pm. The meeting on August 18 will be webcast live via the diocesan website. Comments
will be enabled throughout the live event and, as much as possible, submitted
to the conversation as it occurs. In addition, a podcast will be created from
this webcast for later viewing on the diocesan website with comments sent
directly to Joe Dusek, Treasurer, at treasurer@episcopalmn.org. Comments will be accepted through the month of August.
A draft budget will be available on the diocesan website next week. In the meantime, a full timeline of the budgeting process is available on the website. If you have any questions or need
additional information, please contact Joe Dusek or Jim Pavlik, Chief
Financial Officer, 612-871-3308.

General Convention

Bishop Jelinek's reflections on General Convention 2009 Most of us experience church as a gathering of a few to a few hundred
people coming together for the singular purpose of praising God and
being nurtured, filled, transformed to return to our daily lives with
both grace and strength. Some of us experience church as a collection
of relatively small, purposeful bodies which band together for some
particular mission - believing that God's longing inspires that mission
and God's love empowers that mission. Relatively few of us come
together on behalf of the whole body to listen deeply across many
divisions and through the experiences of many hearts to try, both
humbly and arrogantly, to hear more deeply God's longings and
possibilities and directions for this body as we are further called to
serve in the world. General Convention is one of those gatherings to
which about a dozen of us have been chosen, deputized to serve all of
us known as the Diocese of Minnesota. Read full reflection online...
Read all of the coverage from General Convention on Episcopal Life Online. You can also read final thoughts from our deputation on their blog, www.mngc09.wordpress.com.
Legislation overview, Presiding Bishop brochure delivered to all churches this week Within the next few days, every congregation in MN will be receiving sufficient copies of a 1-page review of General Convention, including Bishop Jelinek's reflections, for inclusion in an upcoming Sunday bulletin or newsletter. Each church will also be receiving a professionally-printed brochure highlighting the Presiding Bishop's recent visit to Minnesota. This keepsake will help interested folks commemorate this important occasion and may be an excellent addition to your newcomers packet.

Thank you to our MN deputies for all of their faithful hard work throughout General Convention! Back row: Rev. LeeAnne Watkins, Rev. Neysa Ellgren, Bishop Jelinek, James Huber, Bob Carmack Front row: Rev. Doug Sparks, Sally Johnson, Rev. Devon Anderson, Gail Sheddy

Bishop Search

Final candidate interviews this weekend submitted by the Rev. Neil Willard, Search Committee This week your Search Committee
for the IX Bishop of Minnesota
will be interviewing 5 remaining candidates. While waiting for the search process to conclude
and the petition process to begin, you might be curious about other episcopal elections that
are at a similar stage. The Diocese of Georgia, which will elect its next
bishop on September 12, has a final slate of 6 candidates (5 through a search
process and 1 by petition). The Diocese of Connecticut, which will elect
its next bishop on October 24, has named 4 candidates through
its search process and is currently receiving additional names as candidates by
petition. Soon it will be our turn to do the same as we move closer to
the election of our next bishop on October 31. Please remember to pray
for everyone involved in these fall elections.

Second annual Summer in the City written by Anna Herpers "When we entered the building, we met a woman who shared her story of
how God save her life. She was homeless, jobless, and poor. Just when
she thought there wasn't any hope left, a woman came to her and told
her to go to the Salvation Army. There, she got her life back on track
and is working there today." Read the entire reflection.
Cabrini Green, Chicago written by Kenzie Howard "We cleaned every wall and the ceilings until the yellowish color was
almost completely gone. After we cleaned the walls and ceilings we
painted them. We also cleaned the whole apartment.
One thing I can take out of this trip is not taking things like a clean home for granted." Read the entire reflection.

| St. Mary's Tower/Ely supports college student in Ethopia
submitted by Eunice Koch
As an ongoing MDG project, St. Mary's is sponsoring
a college-aged student in Ethiopia, paying his tuition and living expenses as
he completes a four-year degree program in nursing. The health challenges in Ethiopia are staggering. Imagine living in a country where one in eight people will face severe hunger
this year, where one in six children will not see their fifth birthday, where
the life expectancy is only 41 years. Imagine further that the most common
illnesses and deaths could be easily prevented. The biggest hurdle to better health in
Ethiopia is the lack of access to health personnel. Training qualified health
care workers across the country, especially in underserved rural populations,
is aimed at addressing this problem. Our student, Gamechis Bivena Fufa, is enrolled in the Mickey Leland Nursing College
in Ghimbi, Ethiopia. It is named for the United States Congressman, Mickey
Leland, who tragically died in a plane crash in Ethiopia in 1989. He was leading a mission to an isolated refugee camp which was sheltering
thousands of unaccompanied children fleeing the civil conflict in neighboring
Sudan.
