Top 5 Things To Do:
Kumasi, Ghana
Home to more than 1.5 million people, Kumasi is known as "The Garden City" because of its many species of flowers and plants. As the busy cultural capital of Ghana, there is much to do in this beautiful city. Here is our list of the top five things to do in Kumasi!
1. Tour Manhyia Palace. Home to past Ashanti kings, Manhyia Palace allows you to travel back in time. Many guests are surprised by the unpretentious living of the highest rulers, as Ashanti kings have never lived in luxury. The current king lives directly behind the old palace in a more updated version. Rumor has it, you might be able to meet the king if you bring a gift and ask politely.
2. Visit the butchery section of the Kejetia Market. The Kejetia Market is one of the largest open-air markets in West Africa and traders from all over the continent come here to do business. The meat section is particularly interesting. Vendors sell all types of meat, many of which you may not recognize!
3. See the infamous Okomfo Anokye Sword. An important Ashanti artifact, this sword has been in the ground for three centuries without ever being removed. The sword represents strength and unity amongst the Ashanti people and if ever pulled out, it is believed that the kingdom will collapse.
4. Dance and drum at the National Cultural Centre. Learn about Ashanti history by visiting one of the best centers for culture and art in Ghana. Besides offering classes in traditional dance and drumming, the center also includes a library, crafts shop and exhibition hall.
5. Visit a nearby village specializing in artisan work. The Ashanti are known for their skills in various types of craft work including wood carving, brass and bronze casting and cloth printing and weaving. Located around Kumasi, many of these villages are accessible by private taxi or minibuses called tro-tros.

Featured Alumni Profile:
Kristen, Intern in Ireland
Kristin is from Texas and graduated from college with a degree in Marketing. She interned in Ireland with World Endeavors.
"As cliché as it may sound, my time abroad was truly a once in a lifetime experience. I knew I wanted to travel more before I settled into a full time career, and I was putting off the real world just a little while longer. I justified it with the professional experience I would be gaining through my internship. What I didn't expect was the incredible amount of personal learning that took place. Deciding to move to Ireland...alone...to live and work for three months, completely changed my life."
"Don't take any moment for granted. It's hard at the beginning, you will experience culture shock, but it is absolutely worth it. By the end of your time abroad, you will be wondering where it all went! Get to know the locals, explore the country, and have fun!"

Testimonials
"The housing we were provided was the BEST hands down!"
"I was pleased with the preparation that World Endeavors put into the program as well as the availability of their staff. I wish that my university was this prepared when I studied abroad. I would recommend World Endeavors to future participants."
"When villagers came to the nursery to get vegetable seedlings we had raised for them, their faces would often light up with happiness as they picked out different plants. I also felt I was making a difference working with the local school kids, because they were so responsive to our conservation lessons. After we taught a lesson about ecology and conservation in two government schools, lots of students wanted to start environmental clubs at their schools and help us plant trees and collect plastic. They also came to the nursery often to help us, and they were always asking us what else they could do to clean up their village. Their energy was comforting and inspiring and they made me feel like my volunteering efforts really did make a difference."

Backpacking on a Budget
When many people plan to study, intern or volunteer abroad they also want to travel within their destination country or to other countries in the region. Whether you are going on a weekend getaway during your placement or an extended trip before or after, you are probably trying to figure out how to make the most out of your limited funds. World Endeavors' staff members, experienced budget travelers themselves, have been in your shoes! Below are several suggestions of ways to stretch your budget and, in the end, be able to see more than you thought you ever could.
- Do as the locals do. A good way to save money is by watching what the locals do in everyday situations. Eat local food, take public transportation and talk to the locals, as they are the experts!
- Plan in advance when possible. When taking short flights it can often save you money to plan in advance. Look for a travel agency that does not charge for their services. They know the ins and outs of the industry and can often times find cheaper flights than you would be able to on your own, especially if you are in a non English-speaking country.
- Research. Travel forums can have great information provided by people with first hand experience. You can find all types of stuff including transportation costs, cheap hostels, things to do etc. Try to decide which information is most accurate and helpful to you, as it is often someone's personal opinion.
- Talk to other travelers. Other backpackers who you come across on your travels can be a great source for valuable, up to date information on where to go, how to get there and what to do. Since the world is continuously changing, they may know something that you may never have found online. Maybe you'll even add another person to your travel group or, for solo travelers, find a buddy!
Remember: even small savings can add up, especially over the course of a long trip.

The Importance of Interning Abroad Anyone looking for a job these days knows how tight the market is. Fierce competition both domestically and internationally means that one must find a way to stand out from the crowd when applying for jobs. Recent graduates are finding that getting their first "professional job" is much more difficult than it was when their parents entered the workforce. Although it's not impossible to be hired without previous experience in your field, candidates who can prove that they have the necessary skills have a definite advantage. And so the vicious cycle begins. You must be hired to gain experience in the field, but how can you gain experience if no one will hire you? The answer is one that is becoming more and more popular in the United States and abroad: interning. This is true not only for recent grads but also for people who have changed professions, been laid off, or taken a break from the workforce and decided to return. An internship allows you to gain valuable experience in your field and acquire the necessary skills that will make you a desirable candidate in you future professional endeavors. So, if so many people are turning to internships to spark their careers, what can you do to set yourself apart from them? An international internship can give you the necessary edge that will elevate you one step above your peers. In our increasingly interconnected world, employers look for job candidates who display interest and understanding of other countries, cultures, languages, and governments. There is no better way to gain experience than to travel and work in another country. Not to mention, it's a blast! World Endeavors offers international internships in a variety of fields and countries. Our internships are completely customized to each participant's interests and qualifications. We have something for everyone!

Featured WE Staff Member: Lauren Penkalski Bookkeeper
Lauren, originally from Oak Creek, Wisconsin, relocated to Minneapolis in 2010 to pursue a degree at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities. She currently spends much of her time studying sociology of law, criminology, and deviance with a minor in management. Lauren studied abroad in Florence, Italy in May 2011 where she learned about the Italian Renaissance and basked in the breathtaking sunsets of the city. She has also visited Mexico a couple of times and would love to travel to the Middle East.
When asked what she likes about working at World Endeavors she replied, "I feel like I'm able to travel vicariously through our participants. When I see that a participant's departure date is coming up, I get excited knowing that they are about to have such a life-changing experience."
Apart from work, Lauren spends time running, doing yoga and watching way too many crime shows.
