Preparing For Your Summer Trip Abroad

Top 5 Things To Do:

Atenas, Costa Rica

 1. Trek a volcano.  Choose one (or more) of the four main volcanoes of the Central Valley.  Hike up to the top for incredible views of the volcano's crater and the surrounding mountains.

2. Go shopping at the Farmer's MarketShop for fresh produce or stop to eat lunch at one of the town's sodas.  These little restaurants serving traditional food sell lunches for around $2-$3!

3. Play amateur botanist at the Botanical Orchid Garden.  Wander the trails through the extensive gardens while observing hundreds of species of beautiful orchids.  Learn about the cultivation process and the ideal environment for orchid growing.

4. Tour a crocodile and tilapia farm.  This agro-ecotourism and animal husbandry school is one of the few of its kind in Latin America.  Besides touring their crocodile and tilapia farms, visitors can taste cheese and buy fresh dairy and beef products.  The school also offers courses in forestry, wildlife, food technology and animal husbandry.

5. Visit Zoo Ave.  Zoo Ave is a wildlife rescue and breeding center, home to 250 native animal species of Costa Rica.  Their goal is to breed animal species endemic to the country for reintroduction to the wild.  You are sure to see animals you never imagined you would experience in real life!

Featured Alumni Profile:

Heather, Intern in Ireland

Heather completed a World Endeavors communications internship abroad with a small business in Ireland.

"My favorite part of the internship was when my boss assigned me to present a part of West Fest. West Fest is a music festival in Western Ireland. There were many big-named bands there. It was a two-day festival and people were camping out in the fields beside the giant tent in which the bands performed. The first day of the festival, a cameraman, a director, and myself as the presenter, walked around to all the campers and interviewed them on how excited they were about the music festival. It was such an exciting weekend! Even though the temperature was below freezing at night, another intern and I camped out on Saturday night. But overall the weekend was amazing and an experience I will never forget."

Testimonials

"I had an amazing experience. It certainly changed my life. I cried getting on the plane to fly back to the US and I now feel like I have a home in Ghana."

 - Kelsey, Volunteer in Ghana

"My classes were really cool, I learned a lot about culture, phonetics, and the things that you can't learn anywhere else.  You have to be there with actual native speakers to really learn."

- Eden, Study in Spain

"From my experience abroad I gained so much. Not only was I finally able to leave the country, but I was able to do it on my own along with learning while I was abroad. I learned so much about myself while I was over there and also about other cultures. I think that being abroad, I grew as a person and have now realized how much I am able to accomplish, and have accomplished."

Preparing For Your Summer Trip Abroad

Whether you're volunteering for two weeks, interning for a couple months or studying for a semester you will most likely do some research and planning before you go abroad.  Here are some tips to assist in the pre-departure process:

  • Research the country you're traveling to!  Yes, this is kind of obvious, but it's important!  It is good to know basic information about where you will be spending your time abroad.  This can help you feel more at home and make adjusting a bit easier.  If you are traveling to a non English-speaking country and you aren't versed in the language, try to learn a few words and phrases to help you navigate life in a new place.
  • Pack lightly.  Hauling two giant suitcases, a carry-on and a personal item through airports, security and to your place of accommodation is not easy or fun.  Choose essential items and a couple of special things from home to pack.  Photos of friends and family, your favorite book or a special stuffed animal from childhood are small items that won't overflow your suitcase.
  • Talk to others about their experiences.  People oftentimes love to talk about their international experiences because it gets them excited and feeling nostalgic.  Ask friends, family members, university contacts, study abroad advisors, and WE staff for recommendation on things to see and do while you are abroad.  Oftentimes you will come across awesome information that you may have never stumbled upon online.
  • Research essential items you may not be able to buy abroad.  Things like deodorant, feminine hygiene products, contact solution, etc. can be difficult to find or very expensive in some countries.  Also, voltage is often different than your home country so it might be a good idea to bring the proper adapters so you can plug in electronics.

Planning for your trip can be very exciting!  Don't overwhelm yourself with too much preparation, but do take the proper steps in setting yourself up to get the most out of your upcoming adventure!

Amy Knight

Amy, originally from St. Louis Park, MN, graduated with a degree in Organizational Communication and Marketing.  While she was in college she had the opportunity to study abroad in the quaint town of Winchester, England.  Besides England, the impressive list of countries she has traveled to includes Mexico, Jamaica, Canada, the Czech Republic, Austria, Germany, Italy, France, Ireland, Spain and Latvia.  One of the things she likes most about traveling is forming long-lasting friendships with the people she meets and getting to experience new things with them.  She enjoys working at WE because of the close relationships that she has with her colleagues.

Jonathan Breher

Jonathan, from Maple Grove, MN, is currently a senior at the University of Minnesota where he studies Economics.  He studied abroad in London during the fall of 2011 and was able to travel to other countries in Europe including other parts of the UK, the Netherlands, France and Germany.  Outside of Europe, Jonathan has visited Canada, Mexico and Dominican Republic.  When asked what he likes about working at WE he said, "My favorite part about working at WE is that you work with students and people who want to go abroad and experience another culture and country.  Having studied abroad, I know how great this experience can be and I enjoy knowing that I'm helping students to have these same experiences."
