Top 5 Things To Do:
Salvador, Brazil
1. Wander the Streets of Pelourinho. Pelourinho is the historic city centre of Salvador. Lined with colorful colonial buildings dating back as far as the 17th century, this is an unbeatable location for music, dining, and nightlife.
2. Visit Farol da Barra. Rebuilt in 1836, this landmark lies where Salvador's first fort was built in 1582 to deter the enemy from entering All Saint's Bay.
3. Taste Local Cuisine. Bahian cuisine, a mix of Brazilian and African influence, is prevalent in Salvador. Moqueca (containing staple ingredients such as seafood, dendê, coconut milk, rice and pirão) and Acarajé (a simple bean roll snack) are among the most popular.
4. Spend a Day at the beach. Salvador is a coastal city with miles of beaches. There are plenty of thrills to seek, such as fishing, surfing, rafting, horseback riding, rock-climbing, parachuting, and hiking.
5. Visit Mercado Modelo. Located in the lower city, the Mercado is abundant with arts and crafts finds, as well as souvenirs. After a fire burnt down the building in 1984, it was completely restored to its original form.

Meet Kaitlin, our featured intern abroad program alum!
During the summer of 2010, Kaitlin spent her time doing a marketing internship in Australia.
"Near the end of my internship Australia stopped being another country and started to feel like home. I am thrilled that I took this opportunity and I learned so much from my internship and myself while participating in this experience. I grew as a person while in Sydney and my experience there gave me the confidence I needed to continue with my career. By participating in this internship I know that I can make a living working in the marketing field. I wouldn't trade my time in Sydney for anything."
To hear more about her experience working as a marketing intern, falling in love with Sydney, and the great impact her internship had, be sure to read her story!

"I loved my host family-they were the most loving, kind, welcoming people I have yet met. They were incredibly patient with our Spanish speaking skills and helped us learn more about the language and culture than I could have ever learned in any classroom. I truly felt like a part of the family and still stay in contact with them."
Julie, Volunteer in Costa Rica
"The benefits I obtained from this experience are infinite. I also learned about how a cultural difference can ever so slightly change the generally accepted ways of functioning in corporations all over the world."
Alison, Intern in Ecuador
"During my time abroad I gained an experience living outside of my comfort zone and studying abroad. I gained a love for Italian food and the Italian language as well as the people, culture, and lifestyle."

Food For Thought

Throughout the years, food has evolved as an art form in many countries.
In India, many chefs worked in palaces and kept their recipes guarded. Unusual dishes became a staple for every meal and royal guests were presented with delicacies such as stuffed camels, goats, pigs, and even peacocks. Today, Mishri Mawa and Ghevar are popular sweets in the region of Jaipur, India.
If you travel west to London, England you will find cuisine known for its simplicity and honesty of flavor. Typical meals include the 'full English breakfast', fish and chips, and the drink of a true englishman: tea.
Italy is another infamous source for some of the world's most popular food. Simple but exploding with flavor, dishes like Pasta Bolognese and Pizza Margherita are tough to beat (not to mention the plethora of gelato stands)!
Many believe that food in Central America is complex and full of spice. However, if you travel to places like Costa Rica and Guatemala, for example, you will find the food to be quite simple. Chefs frown upon spices and the most commonly used ingredients in meals are rice and black beans complemented with some sort of meat. Fresh fruit is very popular as well because of their availability.
The world is exploding with inventive dishes that boggle the mind. The next time you are in new country, take some time to try a local meal!

Featured WE Staff Member:
Alysia Dahlke, Outreach Coordinator

Originally from Baraboo, Wisconsin, Alysia studied in Aix-en-Provence, France and was fortunate enough to travel to 11 different countries during her time abroad. She graduated from UW- LaCrosse with a B.S. in Marketing and a French minor, and enjoys anything involving creativity, spending time with friends and family, photography, learning, traveling, and appreciating the little things in life.
She chose to go abroad because she has always enjoyed eye-opening experiences that take her out of the 'norm' and give her a taste of something different. "There is no better way to grow as a person and learn than by experiencing new places, cultures, people, etc. It's an investment in yourself that is so incredibly worthwhile," says Alysia.
Alysia is passionate about international experiences and really enjoys being able to share that with World Endeavors program participants. "The World Endeavors staff, both in-office and around the world, are all amazing people with great enthusiasm, stories, and knowledge," she says.
