Shanghai

Top 5 Things To Do:

Shanghai, China

1. Hit the streets. While the tall skyline is a must-see, the streets are where you'll see China come alive. Be sure to try some of Shanghai's street food, or check out Nan Jing Road and Huai Hai Road, for example, to get a taste of the city's huge street markets.

2. Wander the Shanghai Museum. With 5,000 years of history, 120,000 Chinese art pieces and archaeological findings, and fascinating bronzes, there's bound to be something here for everyone.

3. Climb the Oriental Pearl TV Tower. Get to the top of one of the highest towers in Asia for panoramic views of the city.

4. Explore the Yu Yuan Gardens. A significant national heritage site, the site of these 400-year-old gardens also boasts the Jade Exquisite (one of three famous jade stones in Eastern China), and a bustling shopping bazaar around the gardens.

5. See the Urban Planning Museum.  Although it doesn't have the most exciting name, this museum is unique and unforgetable- it is one of the world's largest showcases of urban development, and shows a large scale model of urban Shanghai as predicted to look in 2020.

Meet Leigh, a Volunteer Costa Rica alum!

Originally from Conneticut, Keri went to Costa Rica to volunteer at a children's orphanage.

"My interest and curiosity have expanded to learn not just in a textbook.  I am more open to trying new things and to taking myself out of my comfort zone.  I have learned to enjoy where I am, when I am there.  I also learned to appreciate my friends and my family and realize that most differences aren't that different."

To hear about her experiences working with children at the orphanage, falling in love with Costa Rica, the relationship with her host family, and making a difference, be sure to

read her story!

Featured WE Staff Member:

Lindsay Allen, Director of Engagement

Although originally from Minnesota, Lindsay grew up in both Hong Kong and Mexico City. She also interned in China for a summer during college and studied abroad in both Spain and Portugal.

All of her experiences abroad have collectively lead to a life-long passion for travel and all it entails, like exploring, eating food from around the world, watching travel shows on television (especially Rudy and Rick!), and planning new trips.

"Traveling, especially in a meaningful way where you have the opportunity to get to know local people, is one of the most rewarding ways I can think of to spend my time and money. It makes the world smaller and bigger at the same time, and every time I travel I come back with a new perspective, new interests, new knowledge, and new ideas."

Lindsay's experience, knowledge, and spirit make her an integral member of our World Endeavors team. "For me," Lindsay says, "World Endeavors is all about the people - our staff in the US and abroad, our amazing participants and alums, and the communities we work in."
