Top 5 Things To Do:

Hamilton, New Zealand

1. Spend some time on the water. Winding through Hamilton, the Waikato River is New Zealand's longest river.  With such options as kayaking, canoeing, lake waterbikes, river boat trips, and much more, it supplies endless (and often free!) entertainment for everybody.

2. Visit the Waikato Museum. Located near the banks of the Waikato River, the Waikato Museum is a five-story architectural wonder that shares the area's arts, history, culture, and science.

3. Monkey around at the Hamilton Zoo. Home to over 600 native and exotic animals, the Hamilton Zoo is ideal for a relaxing, recreational, and educational visit.

4. Explore the Waitomo Caves. Located just south of Hamilton, the Waitomo Caves are an underground labyrinth of limestone and formations believed to be over two million years old!

5. Stay and travel!  In Hamilton, you are only a short drive from New Zealand's largest city, Auckland, the breathtaking Coromandel Penninsula, the sandy beaches of Mount Maunganui, or the geological wonderland of Rotorua. What better place to study abroad? New Zealand delivers it all!

Tips for Green Traveling

"Going green" is more than just a trend. For many, it's a way of life! There are countless ways to live greener, and your travels are a great place to start!

To go green, you do not need to spend extra money or make many sacrifices. It's easier than you might think- simply be informed. Here are some travel tips that will not only reduce your carbon footprint, but may also save you money!

  1. Wherever possible, walk or bike. Many cities offer fantastic walking tours for free, and rentable bicycles are becoming extremely common.
  2. Use trams, buses, and subways for in-city transportation. They're safe, reliable, environmentally friendly, and best of all, they're inexpensive!
  3. For longer trips, use trains instead of planes! Trains emit less pollution than airlines, and can carry many more passengers. Our favorite perk about trains? Being able to see the countryside during your travels!
  4. 'Stay' green. There are many hotels and hostels around the world that use sustainable practices, so be sure to do your research!
  5. Pack light. Luggage is weighed at the airport to calculate the amount of fuel needed. So bringing just your essentials will not only save you energy by having less to carry, but will also save on fuel!

Featured WE Staff Member:

Marley Sartor, Outreach Intern

Marley

Originally from Michigan, Marley currently studies Public Relations and Italian at the University of Minnesota and is our fantastic outreach team intern at World Endeavors. She spent the spring semester of 2011 studying abroad in Italy, where she was able to live in an area with incredible history, and finally use her Italian skills on a daily basis!

One of her favorite memories from her traveling experiences is from a trip her program took while in Italy. Her sustainability class stayed on a farm in a mountain region of Italy called Abruzzo, where Marley was able to interact with such genuinely "Italian" people and the scenery from the mountains was the most beautiful she has ever seen.

At World Endeavors, she loves being able to talk with people from all over the world on a daily basis. "Also," she notes, "everyone working here has amazing stories to tell from their experiences abroad. I love being able to hear them!"
