Top 5 Things To Do:

Tacloban City, Philippines

1. See the San Juanico Bridge. At over two meters in length, it is the longest bridge in the Philippines and is considered by some to be one of the world's most beautifully-designed and picturesque bridges.

2. Experience the Kuratsa. A traditional Filipino dance, the Kuratsa is known as a 'courtship' dance as it is usually performed by two people. Although this dance is primarily performed at weddings, it can also be experienced at many festivals, including the region's annual Kuratsa Festival!

3. Marvel at Sohoton National Park. Known for its breathtaking geological features, Sohoton is made up of cathedral-like caves, a subterranean river, unique limestone formations, and waterfalls.

4. Wander the Sto. Niņo Shrine. This Filipino shrine and heritage museum is one of the 29 presidential rest houses built by the late President Ferdinand Marcos. Inside you'll find historical artifacts, along with a number of guest rooms with various themes.

5. Get out and explore! With many options to travel by air, land, or sea, Tacloban City is a major travel hub to access different areas in the region.

Meet Matthew, Study in the Philippines alum!

Having spent a semester studying abroad in the Philippines, Matthew says his time there led to a great leap for his worldview. His journey took him to the other side of the world and exposed him to the culture, politics, and overall lifestyle of the Philippines.

"Because of my trip, I have a greater interest in traveling. Despite my interest in the Philippines, I was very hesitant to go because my comfort zone was right here in the U.S. I am now quite glad I took the opportunity to go abroad when I did, and I am emboldened to hopefully do some world traveling again."

Since returning from the Philippines, Matthew still keeps in touch with those he met there. He even still avidly reads the news from the area, regularly checking the website of the 'Philippines Daily Inquirer', the newspaper at which one of his University of the Philippines professors worked.

Matthew now looks forward to graduating college this month, and says he has used his World Endeavors experience in so many ways, including in his college courses, college thesis, and in conversations with others interested in or connected to the country.

"As a result of my exposure to the Philippines I remain interested in, and knowledgeable about, a country and region of the world I only knew superficially previously."

Testimonials

"The more I look back on it, the more I think about how it was the most positive experience and best thing I've done in my life."

Madelyn,  Volunteer in Costa Rica

"I really enjoyed being immersed in the culture and making new friends. Not only did I work with Spanish people, but I worked with other international students as well so it was nice to learn about both the Spanish culture and other cultures as well."

Stephanie, Intern in Spain

"The benefits never end.  I loved my time spent in Thailand.  It was a more unique experience than most people I know who studied abroad.  I got to learn a new language and go to a University with students from all over the world."

Summer Festivals Around the World

Summer is finally here! And one of the best things about summer travels are those fun, unique, and exciting festivals around the world. Here are a few to be sure to put on your to-do list:

Sydney Film Festival, Sydney, Australia:

Held for over 12 days each June, this film festival draws both international and local attention. Expand your knowledge of media with its documentaries, short films, retrospectives, and animations.

Pistoia Blues Festival, Florence, Italy:

This 3-day festival lasting from July 8-10 has been known to boast some of the biggest names in the genre. Located just outside of Florence, this festival allows you to get your groove on in Pistoia's beautiful Piazza del Duomo.

Tamu Dhee (aka Trahonte), Pokhara, Nepal

Ceremonies are performed during Tamu Dhee to purge the neighborhood of evil spirits, safeguard the farms from hostile elements, and ensure peace. Groups of people beating on drums, and participants with feather headdresses all form a colorful procession through the beautiful landscape of Pokhara.

La Tomatina, Valencia, Spain:

Held on the last Wednesday of August each year, this adult-sized massive food fight takes place in Bunol, a small town near Valencia. The tomatoes for la Tomatina are specially grown for the occasion and people are to pre-squash before throwing them to prevent injury.

Featured WE Staff Member:

Kamini LaRusso, Accounting Assistant

Kamini

Kamini is our WE Accounting Assistant, but more importantly, she has the ability to put a smile on anybody's face! Born and raised in Madison, WI, her parents are both originally from India and she has taken many family trips back to visit.

In high school, Kamini's youth orchestra travelled to Spain and France, which was a life-changing experience and ignited her life-long interest in travel. One of her favorite traveling memories, though, is of a special trip to India when her father accompanied her, along with her 10 aunts, to go shopping for her wedding.

Kamini enjoys traveling(!), playing violin, reading, running, yoga, and spending lots of time with her friends and family. Overall, she says she loves working at World Endeavors because of all the staff members' ability to help others, work with a driven ethic, treat each participant as an individual, and enjoy a few lunchtime laughs.
