Top 5 Things To Do:

Tanzania

1. Explore the Ngorongoro Crater. The wildlife preserve in this crater has an incredible amount of animal life! You can see rhinos, hippos, wildebeest, zebra, and the densest known population of lions.

2. Visit Old Stone Town  in Zanzibar. Walk through its many narrow streets while you soak up the history of the city that served as a trading post and meeting place for many cultures.

3. See Mount Kilimanjaro. Don't worry if you don't want to actually hike all the way up Africa's tallest peak. The national park it's in has a rainforest, lots of wildlife and stunning views of the mountain.

4. Explore the Arusha Market.  Catch glimpses of everyday life amid the colorful heaps of fresh vegetables, fruits, and local handicrafts.

5. Visit Dar Es Salaam and discover its Swahili, Arabic and Indian influences in the many markets and small restaurants lining its streets.

World Endeavors offers various volunteer programs in Tanzania including teaching, health care and orphanage assistance:

Meet Maggie, Volunteer in Ecuador

Maggie volunteered for 2 months while a sophomore in college. She found the experience unforgettable. In addition to making friends and working hard, she got mistaken for a former Miss Ecuador many times!

Maggie 2

As she began her trip, Maggie knew she was going to a place unlike anything she'd ever experienced. As she arrived at her new temporary home, her host mother told her, "Our home may be small, but it is filled with love." With this greeting, Maggie knew she was going to have an amazing experience and felt right at home.

Maggie formed many bonds with the people of Ecuador that continued to effect her life after she returned to the US.  The children from the orphanage even sent her a handmade birthday card.

She has some advice for anyone thinking about going abroad-- "Do it now!" Check out our full interview with Maggie, to hear more about her trip and about volunteering in Ecuador.

The Value of an Internship Abroad

Interning abroad is a great way to earn practical experience, professional skills, and a global perspective.

The skills you learn while interning abroad, including adaptability, resourcefulness, and creativity, cannot be learned through textbooks. While you're learning these skills, you'll get a chance to test out academic concepts in the real world and gain on the job experience.

International experience itself has become an increasingly sought after skill in many professions. Your ability to work with people of many cultures will make you better equipped to work in today's interconnected world. In addition, an internship in a non-English speaking country can give you the added benefit of advanced language skills, another great edge for your resume.

Internships abroad are also a great option due to their flexibility. You don't have to fit them into a semester, and can start them year-round. They also offer an affordable alternative to someone looking for a reasonably priced opportunity to go abroad.

Featured WE Staff Member: Janey Fell, Outreach Coordinator

Janey has had extensive experience abroad in Europe and Central America, and works to find the right international experience for every World Endeavors participant.

In addition to studying abroad in Spain during college and traveling throughout Europe, Janey recently spent five months volunteering in Costa Rica. Her favorite experiences in Costa Rica included looking into an active volcano and learning to make tortillas and empanadas with her host mother.

            Janey

Janey's time in Costa Rica made her realize the importance of international education, and the incredible value her own time abroad.

Janey loves being a part of the close-knit team at World Endeavors. Her favorite part of her job is getting to share in participants' excitement as they prepare to go abroad, and living vicariously through them while they are abroad! She advises anyone going abroad to remember to look at everything they do abroad as an opportunity to experience something they could never experience at home.
