1. Where should I go?
The possibilities are limitless - how can you decide? Pay attention to your own dreams and desires when it comes to choosing a location. Curious about a specific region of the world? This is a great time in your life to explore it! Popular destinations for North Americans include those where the culture and language are similar. But there's a big world out there beyond the traditional destinations. World Endeavors offers culturally immersive experiences in Africa, Asia and South America where you could learn a new culture, language and point of view.
2. What type of experience do I want?
For some, studying abroad makes the most sense. But it isn't necessarily the best way to experience a new culture. Volunteering abroad is a powerful way to learn about a region and yourself while serving the needs of others. Countless World Endeavors alumni credit their volunteer experience with changing their lives and shaping their future. Interning abroad is another great idea. Potential employers will be impressed by international experience, and a unique and professional internship will prove invaluable on your resume as you launch your career.
3. How will I fund my experience?
Today's globe trekker needs to be savvy with money, especially as currencies fluctuate. Using financial aid is one way to make your travel dreams materialize. But don't rule out other options. Some participants fundraise or ask friends and family for donations. Others work an extra job and cut back on spending. Many participants adjust the duration of their experience to fit their financial needs - opt for three weeks rather than three months, for example. Remember that an experience abroad, whether volunteering, interning or studying, has value - it will enrich your life, make you a good global citizen and help build your resume. And it is certainly worth the expense!
4. Do I need school credit?
Studying abroad is a great way to earn school credit. If you don't need to earn school credit, great. You have many different options. But did you know that quite a few schools give credit for volunteering and internships? A quick visit to your advisor will help you understand your options. World Endeavors has worked with many colleges and universities help students get credit when possible.
5. Where is it safe to go?
World Endeavors chooses programs that provide a safe and stable environment- it's our number one priority. Beyond that, it depends upon your own personal comfort zone. Some places may feel safer because they are more culturally familiar. But in today's modern world it is difficult to guarantee ultimate safety anywhere. Understand the pitfalls and challenges of your destination. World Endeavors prepares participants with a pre-departure handbook. With the handbook and your own common sense, we are confident that you will have a safe experience abroad.
6. Should I travel with a friend, group or by myself?
Travel brings personal transformation and that transformative power is there whether you journey with a buddy or make a solo trip. You will naturally make some concessions in either case. If you travel with a group or friend, you will feel the comfort and companionship of others going through a similar experience. However, you risk the chance of reduced cultural immersion. Traveling by yourself takes confidence - there will certainly be times when you feel alienated and lonely. Truth is, however, you're never really alone. Solo trips allow a great chance to bond with local friends, enjoy cultural immersion and meet fellow international travelers. Either way, we can help you plan a trip by yourself or with a group of your friends.
We would love to speak with you anytime about your options - our staff can tell you more about our unique and affordable programs. You should be warned, however, that our passion for international travel and learning is contagious!
