Greetings!

Six summers ago, the founders of Thinking Beyond Borders asked themselves how they could use their combined talents and passions to have a profound and positive impact upon the world. As the idea for TBB took shape, we began sharing it with others. Years later, there are literally thousands of members of the TBB community all around the world who believe in our shared mission -- to prepare and inspire students to address critical global issues. This month, TBB is proud to welcome new members to the center of this community.

Introducing the Newest TBB Program Leaders and Board Members!

On the forefront of all that TBB does are the incredibly talented and dedicated Program Leaders. This year, we're thrilled to introduce 6 new PLs who will join Scott Ingram and Jessie Elisberg in supporting the students in all of their learning and growth. Additionally, TBB's continued growth as an organization is built on the unparalleled leadership of the board of directors. TBB is so fortunate to announce the addition of 3 impressive new additions to our board of directors, as well! Please follow the links below to learn more about these exceptional new members of the TBB community.

The Honican's Summer of Sustainable Eating

Update: The Honican's Summer of Sustainable Eating

As many who follow the newsletter regularly remember, Lauren Honican, TBB Class of 2011, and her family have taken up the challenge to eat sustainably all summer long. They're pretty serious about it. Here are the guidelines:

3 months: June through August 2011

  • Local (within 100 miles)
  • Bought directly from the farmer
  • Whole
  • Organic
  • Seasonal
  • Grass-fed beef
  • Free-range meat, poultry, and dairy
  • Sustainably caught or farmed seafood
Check out their website to read the blog of their progress, pick up some incredible recipes, and maybe find some inspiration!

Parting the Waters: America in the King Years

by Taylor Branch

When asked to name an agent of change, most people will name Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. among their top three. Really, most will probably name him first. Taylor Branch's Parting the Waters: America in the King Years is the first of a trilogy about the role Dr. King played in the modern Civil Rights Movement (CRM) from 1954 - 1968. This hefty series is an exploration of one of the principle leaders of the movement. Branch weaves together the personal, professional, and spiritual depth of Dr. King's life in a compelling and intimate way. His research into the daily progress of the CRM is exceptional, illustrating the nuances and complexities of a highly emotional and tumultuous time in America. But, what won Branch the Pulitzer for this first book of the trilogy is his uncanny ability to unite Dr. King's narrative with the progression of the broader movement and societal times. This is no regular history book.

While we're thrilled to welcome these incredible new members of the TBB community, we're also excited to introduce the students who will make up the Ecuador Gap Semester Class of 2011 and Global Gap Year Class of 2012. For that, stay tuned until next month!
