Greetings! Spring is the most inspiring season of the year at Thinking Beyond Borders. The class of 2011 finished an incredible year first with their final Presentations of Learning in Washington DC, Boston, and New York City. Then they shared their passion, vision, and determination to create change with family and friends at graduation weekend. All of this happened as we continue to meet the outstanding new student and Program Leader applicants for the TBB 2012 Global Gap Year and Ecuador Gap Semester programs. As nature gives us new life and warmer weather, we find ourselves surrounded by inspiration! |
 Congratulations Class of 2011!
It was a phenomenal weekend celebrating the work and commitment of the Thinking Beyond Borders Global Gap Year Class of 2011. Hosted by The Lewis Institute at Babson College, the students shared their culminating Presentations of Learning with family, friends, and other members of the TBB community. After 8 months of living on the road, constantly engaging extraordinary learning moments, and challenging their assumptions, these exceptional students and Program Leaders are ready. They are ready for a lifetime pursuit of meaningful solutions to our world's greatest challenges. Congratulations to them for their hard work and dedication! We're proud to claim them as members of the TBB community. |
Exploring the Meaning of "Minority" by Jessie Elisberg, TBB Program Leader
As I made my way down the dirt road sewing together the town of Bahia Ballena one early morning in September, I contemplated what it means to be a woman in the developing world. The key word there was had to ... Read More |
Book Review: Guns, Germs, and Steel by Jared Diamond
13,000 years ago, societies around the world were in the same basic state of development. Levels of technology, social structures, and political institutions were not necessarily parallel across continents, but their stages of evolution were similar. In Guns, Germs, and Steel Jared Diamond illuminates and analyzes anthropological research to determine why some societies developed physical and social technologies faster than others.
Or, to put it in more common language, he writes about why some became modern while others remained "backward." Diamond aims to paint a full picture of the comparative advantages of certain climates, concentrations of key resources, and even weather patterns (directions of trade winds, for example) to make the point that some societies simply had an easier time feeding themselves and avoiding disease. Like the budding leaves and blooming flowers, spring is the time when TBB grows. Each new student, family, and Program Leader to join the TBB community represents another commitment to seeking proactive solutions to the challenges of our world. As I said to the Class of 2011 as they prepared to cross the stage as graduates just 10 days ago, there is a lot of work to do -- so let's get started.
Sincerely,
Robin Pendoley Co-Founder/CEO Thinking Beyond Borders www.thinkingbeyondborders.org |
