Greetings!
"If only you could see the place... If only you could feel the place." Those are words from TBB student Maddie Peterson's blog that give me goose bumps. She's talking about the connection she made with the host community where she lived and worked last month in Los Naranjos, Ecuador. She's talking about the change she felt after just one month living with this community. There is something so powerful and exciting about that...

Farewell, Sweat and SNOW! by TBB Student Maddie Peterson
It's now been two days since we departed from Los Naranjos, and I already miss it very much. If you had told me I would feel that way on the day that I arrived, I would have said you were crazy. How ignorant was I? Now five weeks later, I miss my family and miss my friends. All they had to offer me was care, concern, and community, but are there any greater gifts than these? Surrounded by this love, I had came to appreciate so much my existence in the jungle - so relaxed, so loved, so appreciated for just being me.

More U.S. students taking 'gap year' break By Tanya Mohn, msnbc.com
With long days of AP classes, evenings and weekends overloaded with homework and extracurricular activities, endless studying for SATs and ACTs, filling out college applications and writing the dreaded college essays, it's high-stress time for many high school seniors.
"I would like to see gap year become a primary component to how we view education in the states," said Chris Stakich, one of the co-directors of USA Gap Year Fairs, and co-founder of Thinking Beyond Borders, an international program that focuses on global development issues. "I never met a student who said he regretted taking a gap year. The opportunities are endless." Full Story

Book Review: Oracle Bonesby Peter Hessler
China is...well...really difficult to describe. It's nearly impossible to pick up a newspaper or magazine these days without finding a story about it. We receive snippets about China's economy, pollution, energy policy, human rights record, Olympic aspirations, and transition from Communism to Market-Socialism. Peter Hessler's National Book Award winning Oracle Bones takes us beyond this surface level into the reality of day-to-day Chinese life. However, it's not just about the present day. Hessler takes us deeper by interweaving thousands of years of Chinese history into his illustrations of the people of modern China. By providing intimate portraits of the elite, the urban middle class, and the folks of small rural communities, and making the historical connections among these communities, he goes beyond just cross sections of society and creates an accessible, inter-woven narrative of the yesterday, today, and tomorrow of China. With a unique narrative voice, Hessler creates a seamless interplay of historical analysis, journalistic reporting, and personal observations. It is engaging from beginning to end. Read More |
The students completed their hike to Machu Picchu and are now in China. What does Maddie have to say about that? "I've only been here a week, but I already know that my horizons will be expanded here as much as they were in Ecuador."
Yes, these are exciting times for Thinking Beyond Borders. We have a lot to be thankful for this season. We hope you feel it, too. We hope you stay in touch and help us meet the challenges ahead.
Happy Thanksgiving!
