The Indian Gothic

TBB Students Bridget Callahan, Laura Conway, and Shawn Childs completed this mosaic entirely from natural products and waste collected in Dethali, India. It is an artistic expression of the
way our choices about food and consumption impact the future and well-being of
a community.

Greetings!
TBB student Marianna reflects on her experience in India in her blog post "Who are we to judge?" The group's last
week in the Indian villages was filled with special meals and final cups of chai with new friends and family, but the experience meant much more than that.
Now the group has moved on to South Africa, where they are learning about the HIV/AIDS Epidemic and Public Health.

Who are we to judge? by TBB Student Marianna Brady
It has been a personal struggle for me in India to decide when to be or
not to be an American. There was obviously no way for me to hide my
pale skin and five foot nine frame, but the challenge I encountered was
when to assimilate into the culture and when to press my feminist
values upon those I met. I had a 'Rosa Parks' moment the first day in
Delhi. I hopped into the front seat of the van on the way to the Red
Fort only to be met with a glare from the driver and a finger pointed
in my face as he said, "You lady, back. Him (pointing at Zander) sit in
front. You in back." Read More

Making TBB Affordable by TBB Co-Founder Robin Pendoley
Thinking Beyond Borders' Gap Year program is really expensive. Sure, it's more affordable than a year
at most private colleges in the US, but few can afford that without the help of
financial aid. From the very
beginning, we have recognized this as the primary challenge in making this
incredible learning and growth opportunity available to the rising generation's
greatest leaders. I wanted to
offer an update on our efforts to make TBB accessible to all highly qualified
applicants, regardless of financial need (a goal we have not yet met).

Putting a Human Face to the HIV/AIDS Pandemic
TBB 2008-09 Student Liz Kuenstner created this scrapbook (first on
paper, then digitized) to put a human face to the HIV/AIDS pandemic.
The photos and stories are of people she met while shadowing home-based
caregivers in the townships surrounding Plettenberg Bay, South Africa. We've just learned that it is now part of a
university's nursing curriculum in Cape Town! TBB's current students are just beginning their stay in Plettenberg Bay. View Scrapbook

Movie Review: Pandemic: Facing AIDSDirected by Rory Kennedy
Understanding the global
HIV/AIDS pandemic is no easy task.
Estimates of the numbers of infected vary by the tens of millions (20-40
million), measurements of prevalence rates (the percentage of the population in
a given area that is infected) around the world are notoriously inaccurate, and
the prescription to address the crisis is different for virtually every
community. Pandemic: Facing AIDS aims to put a human and local face on the
illness. Rory Kennedy's
documentary provides a look into the daily lives of five people living with
HIV/AIDS on five separate continents.
The film provides a powerful balance of examining the root causes of the
individuals' infections and the challenges of attaining treatment with the
effects of the illness on the infected, his/her family, and the broader
community. The film assumes that,
while knowing the global and national statistics are important to understanding
the scope of the pandemic, it is the individual and local realities that
provide the perspective needed to begin to pursue solutions. Read More
