Greetings!

This seems to be a month of introductions.  This newsletter features thoughts from an incoming TBB student as well as a welcome to new Program Leaders and a new member of the Board of Directors.  And, though he may not need an introduction, we're offering you the chance to meet James Blake in person this August (and support TBB at the same time).

Every morning, I wake up at 6:05 to the loud beep of my travel alarm clock and the silence of a sleeping house. My host brother, who will receive a ride to school in the family's BMW X5, will be asleep for another 45 minutes. After a week in China, I decide to surrender the comforts of sleeping later and riding in a car and walk to school. I have finally been given an opportunity to gain some independence, and I am determined to make the most of it. This is my first true expression of self-determination.  Read More

James BlakeMeet James Blake!
by Ethan Brown, TBB Supporter and Attendee at Last Year's Event

I'll admit nearly a year ago when I drove from Philadelphia to Fairfield for the inaugural James Blake cocktail event, it was mainly for one reason. Though I wanted to support a friend and the great work that TBB is doing, I was mainly pumped to meet James Blake.  Can you blame me? Out of all of the professional tennis players, only Blake has a fan club recognized with its own name.

If the attraction of Blake coupled with tasty food and drink, an impressive selection of great auction items and a rousing good time aren't enough of a draw, the enjoyment that comes from seeing the passion of the TBB staff and witnessing the effect that this organization is having on its young adult participants certainly ensures a good time.
Don't miss this chance to bid on some fun prizes, to learn more about the organization, and to be inspired by what these students are doing.  And if the person who edged me out for the Pilot Pen tickets is reading this...I'm not intending to lose this year. Better bring the checkbook.

Pedagogy of the OppressedBook Review:
Pedagogy of the Oppressed

by Paulo Freire

There are only a few areas of development that are considered absolutes and included in every nation's plan for growth and prosperity.  Education is certainly one of them.  Yet, the concept of what it means to "educate" someone is rarely examined.  Perhaps, like the term "development", education simply is too broad, too sticky, too loaded a topic for anything less than a deep philosophical tome.  Paulo Freire's seminal work Pedagogy of the Oppressed attempts to drive to the heart of the issue.  By dissecting the relationship among teachers, learners, and the subject of study (or what educators call "pedagogy"), Freire illustrates the potential of education to be either oppressive or liberating.  Read More
