Greetings!

So many of our readers responded to last month's article I believe in the power of a smile to a stranger.   This month, as we celebrate the completion of our inaugural year, we thought we'd share another student's reflections from her time abroad with TBB.
Emily with Thai Host Family

I believe that human understanding
does not necessitate a shared language, culture or lifestyle.
   By Emily Ausubel

This past year, I spent six and a half months traveling around the world meeting people from three continents and eight different countries. Several relationships I formed over the course of my travels are some of the most important relationships I have had in my life.  Through these relationships, I discovered that I can establish a connection with every person I meet, and more importantly, that I don't have to share their language, culture or lifestyle to do so.

For three weeks of my travel, I lived in Northern Thailand in a 125-person farming community called Huay Hee.  The people who live in Huay Hee speak Thai, but they also have their own language, Pakinaw, which is a derivative of Burmese.  As one might expect, I had never studied Thai or even heard of Pakinaw before this trip.  As I walked up the road to my home stay that first day in Huay Hee, a wave of anxiety passed over me as I realized I couldn't even introduce myself properly or say, "It's nice to meet you" and "thank you so much for having me in your home."

TBB Graduates Agents of Change

Graduation 2009After 35 weeks of traveling, engaging the global community's greatest challenges, and exploring their own potential as agents of change, TBB's first class of students graduated on May 3rd.  Hosted by Nobles & Greenough school in Dedham, MA, the two day event allowed the TBB community to come together and hear student Presentations of Learning, meet one another, and celebrate the commitment that each student has made to addressing the challenges of our world.  The weekend represented exceptional achievement by the students and the community that has given time, energy, and funds to create an organization to pursue proactive social change by developing global consciousness among youth.
Running
TBB & the Cleveland Marathon
Over 30 TBB'ers came out on Sunday, May 17 to run or walk in this years Cleveland Marathon, Half Marathon and 10K.  Together, they collected more than 250 donations to raise a grand total of $30,654.00!!   We also had three participants place in the top 50 of the half marathon out of 3900 runners.  It was a great weekend.  We would especially like to thank everyone who supported our runners through this campaign.  A very special thanks to all of our fundraisers and also to the staff at the Cleveland Marathon.  We had a lot of fun over the weekend, and are planning next year's events already.  Sign up now for the next year's Cleveland Marathon on May 16th, 2010.  We'll see you there!
We'd like to give one final thank you to all of the people who made this year possible: students, families, partners abroad, donors, runners, volunteers, board members, and staff.  I spoke with one student this past weekend who summed it all up saying, "It makes a difference."

Thank you,
