Greetings!

September 1st marked the beginning of TBB's second fiscal year, September 4th the first group of TBB students departed for orientation in Costa Rica, and September 15th two new individuals joined the TBB team.
Thank YouThank You!

Early September marked two major milestones in the young but vibrant story of TBB.  First, the beginning of the month brought an end to TBB's first fiscal year and the beginning of its second.  Having successfully achieved an ambitious fundraising goal and completed the year well under the budget approved by the TBB Board of Directors, there was clearly quite a bit to celebrate.  Second and most importantly, the first TBB program group departed.  As we mark both of these tremendous achievements, it is crucial that we take the time to recognize some of the incredible contributions of the TBB community.  You all have truly made this possible.  Read More
Orientation in Costa Rica

In front of Banana Trees

When asked what they thought of orientation - between exclamations of "It was awesome!" and "It got me really fired up!" - the students talked about how well the group began to come together right from the beginning, the incredible adventures, and the interesting discussions.  They spoke of things they found challenging (like jumping off a waterfall) and things they never expected to do (like collecting eggs from a sea turtle and burying them in a hatchery under a nearly full moon).  Read More

Confessions of an EHMBook Review: Confessions of an Economic Hit Man
by John Perkins

John Perkins was part of a small and secretive sect among international corporate executives known as "Economic Hit Men" or EHMs.  After nearly 30 years as an EHM, this book exposes the little known history of how a few pivotal figures changed the course of world history.  By filling a key intermediary role among development corporations, international lenders, and developing nations, EHMs like Perkins served to skew statistical analyses and exert undue influence on decision makers.  The result, according to Perkins, has been the intentional saddling of developing nations with massive international debt, while funneling large engineering projects and the funds to pay for them to US corporations.  Perkins conveys stories of corruption, intrigue, and conspiracy to impoverish those in the greatest need, and he does it all from the position of someone who made it all happen.   Read More

Now the TBB student group is settling into life in Ecuador - building ecological toiletes, digging wells, and learning about the development issues surrounding water in a rural indigenous community - but that is a story for next month!

As they say in Costa Rica...
