There are just two weeks until the first group of TBB students departs for their program!  We thought we'd take the time here to share a few more details on what they will be doing and the impressive organizations with which TBB is fortunate to partner. Introducing the TBB Program Partners Abroad Thinking Beyond Borders programs are unique and powerful learning experiences that provide students an opportunity for in-depth study of international development and world cultures.  All of this is made possible by the partnerships that TBB has formed with carefully selected educational and development organizations in each of our five Core Countries.  These organizations host TBB program groups by working with our Program Staff to facilitate service-learning opportunities, arrange homestays, and coordinate the basic logistics associated with daily activities.  Read More The Board of Directors and Its Newest Members They ask tough questions.  Dissecting budgets, reviewing program planning, and challenging the founders to build a stable and well designed organizational foundation is precisely what they do best.  They are focused, professional, and determined.  The TBB Board of Directors is an impressive team, collaborating to ensure the organization is built to effectively pursue its mission.  We're excited to announce this month that the team has grown with the addition of two impressive new members.  Read More A Successful Evening with James Blake The bids are tallied, the food is gone, and a good time was had by all.  It's official: An Evening with James Blake was a huge success.  Over 80 guests came out to Penfield Beach in Fairfield, CT to meet James and learn more about Thinking Beyond Borders.  We had 42 items for the silent auction, perfect weather, good music, inspiring speeches, and seemingly endless food and drinks.  Read More Book Review: The White Man's Burden by William Easterly William Easterly is a former World Banker staffer and is currently a professor at NYU.  Building on his extensive research and personal experience in the field of international development, The White Man's Burden delivers a strong critique of the efforts of the "developed" world to assist the "developing" world with foreign aid.  Combining personal stories and clearly stated research, Easterly argues the $2.3 trillion loaned as development assistance since the end of WWII has not only failed to improve the lives of the worlds' poorest, but has often resulted in greater poverty and oppression.  He also illuminates development success stories that have happened without - or even in spite of - assistance from developed nations.  These ideas represent a direct attack on the dominant development paradigm in international policy circles at the world's leading development institutions.  Read More Clearly, it was another busy month at TBB, and there are lots of exciting things to come!  In the months ahead, both this newsletter and our website will begin to feature more student media.  You'll be able to follow TBB student progress as they create articles, videos, and podcasts about their work and the issues they study.
