An Evening with James Blake
James Blake, ranked eighth among professional tennis players
in the world, will be hosting an evening of cocktails and a silent auction on August 19th from 6-10 PM to benifit Thinking Beyond Borders. The event will take place between the 2008 Olympics,
where James will be representing the United States, and the beginning of the US
Open, an ATP Grand Slam tournament. This
will be a great time to meet James and speak with him about tennis, his career,
and his passion for helping TBB. Renee Slajda, a local student from Beacon
Falls who is also a participant in this year's program, will be on hand
to speak about her life experience and what TBB means to her.

It's 8 a.m. and the pigeons around me still outnumber the crane-necked
tourists. By now I have learned to time my arrival to school based on
the progress of the souvenir vendors. If the postcard racks are set up,
I can stop for a newspaper. When I see the plastic replicas of the
actual structure in front of me, I know it's time to run. But not
before taking a moment to gaze at the Coliseum, a full, white moon
still hanging above it. When I arrived in Rome as an exchange student
this September, I promised myself I would never pass it by without
remembering how beautifully surreal my life is. So far, it's been an
easy promise to keep. Read More

Book Review: The End of Poverty by Jeffery Sachs
This month we begin a new feature in Translations. Each month, TBB will offer a book review of one of the many texts we use during the course of our curriculum. Books are chosen for the TBB Book Review because they offer unique insight into international development issues and inspire us each to be proactive agents of change. If you are interested in exploring some of the ideas TBB students will be engaging during the program, pick up a few books and follow along! Read the Review
