Judy's Favourite Canadian CDs for 2009
|
· Patrick Watson ~ Wooden Arms (Rock)
Patrick's caught
the ear of the indie music scene with his two most recent releases both
garnering Polaris Prize nominations (and one win). While on a trip to
NYC last spring we saw him perform, and it reminded me of a vaudeville
show. Surprising, innovative, humorous and melodic are all words that
describe this latest release. $19.95
· Alana Levandoski ~ Lions and Werewolves (Rock) Alana's
second CD is a hard driving, roots / rock effort with a little hint of
country, (but don't let that scare you off). She's big in Britain,
highly regarded amongst the music press and I'm hoping that more people
will get to know Alana with this new collection of songs. Turn up the
volume!
$19.95
· Chloe Albert ~ Dedicated State (Roots)Chloe's
songwriting and beautiful voice, not to mention deft arrangements and
stellar sound quality, make this, her first CD, a winner all around.
Watch for this Edmonton girl to go places. Heck she's already been all
the way to Stratford! $19.95
 · Madison Violet ~ No Fool For Trying (Roots) Third try
for MV and they've got the formula down now. Excellent songs and
gorgeous harmonies make a CD that I can't stop listening to. It's
happy music to get you through the winter. MoJo magazine in December
said this is their third favourite CD in the world to listen to!! $19.95
· Lennie Gallant ~ If We Had a Fire (Roots) One of the
most romantic lyricists in the country turns out another winner.
Lennie's love songs are poignant and timeless. He's also a great live
show, if you get the chance to see him, please do. $19.95
· Diana Panton ~ Pink {Jazz) Diana's sweet voice is
well suited to her choice of standards, this time (third release for
the young Hamilton artist) the songs are all about new love .. Pink!
Excellent sound again, and top notch jazz artists accompany on a fine
CD. $19.95
· Howie Beck ~ How to Fall Down in Public (Rock) Songs that
drag you in and won't let go, each listen reveals another layer of
something you've not expected. Even the song without words is a thing
of beauty.
$19.95
· Lee Harvey Osmond ~ Quiet Evil (Rock) Here's the
late night listen of the pack ... pour a whiskey while you're at it.
Veteran musicians Tom Wilson and Brent Titcomb hide behind the
confusing moniker, but they aren't hiding their talent at writing and
performing killer songs. $19.95
· Amelia Curran ~ Hunter Hunter (Roots) Newfoundland's
Amelia is another brilliant addition to the roster of great Canadian
female voices. She's got the songwriting talent too. What's in the
water out there?
$19.95
· Catherine MacLellan ~ Water in the Ground (Roots) When
you grow up with Gene MacLellan as your father, songwriting is in your
blood. This apple didn't fall far from the tree, and her voice is
hauntingly beautiful too.
$19.95
· Jacksoul ~ Soulmate (R & B) Haydain
Neale, Jacksoul passed away this year. Shortly after his death, this
final CD was released. What an enduring gift we are left to remember
him by, touching songs from a man who knew love. $19.95
· Elisapie Isaac ~There Will Be Stars (Rock) Originally
of the northern Quebec duo Taima, Elisapie makes the kind of music I
would love to hear in an Ice Hotel lounge. (now there's a Canadian
image!) She sings in English, French and Inuktitut and every song is a
thing of beauty. $19.95
· K'Naan ~ Troubadour (Rap) Yup, rap. This
guy is brilliant. Originally from Somalia, K'Naan has been in Canada
since he was 13. He writes songs about his life, and it's not always
pretty. Thought provoking lyrics, driving rhythms, fabulous tunes. One
of his songs has been chosen as the 2010 FIFA World Cup anthem, well
deserved success for K'Naan. $19.95
