Neil & Judy's Favourites of 2007 {in no particular order}
|
· Feist ~ The Reminder
Hauntingly spare, breezy & blissful pop songs that hook you like a big mackerel. Leslie Feist has emerged from Toronto rock band By Divine Right through Broken Social Scene to become a HUGE solo star. With a clean cut delivery & a stylish, delicate aura that surrounds her beautiful voice & persona like a pashmina wrap Feist is a big deal. Four Grammy nominations just in.
· Justin Hines ~ Sides
Here's a new singer-songwriter who has captured our fullest attention. Stunning songs {check out April On The Ground} sung by a guy who views life as a glass half-full not half-empty. This is gentle but powerful stuff {'it's not the dirt on your soles but the diamonds in your eyes'} that will have you reaching for this CD time & again. Bravo! Learn more, click here : Justin's Bio
· Shaye ~ Lake Of Fire
Harmony-driven pop tunes from three singer-songwriting fems from the East Coast. Their voices & styles are different but they sound gorgeous together, whether harmonizing or taking the lead. Sexy rock to raspy country to ethereal folk. Just nominated for 2 ECMA awards.
· Dawn Tyler Watson & Paul Deslauriers ~ En Duo One guitar, two voices that blend together like coffee and cream, a bunch of well chosen cover tunes from different genres, stellar sound quality. This gentle recording rests in our blues section but crosses borders and makes it a winner for anyone's taste.
· Liam Titcomb ~ Can't Let Go
Think Dylan, Beatles & Neil Young, think old-school rock & roll, new pop rock but mostly be prepared for songs with great lyrics from a young artist who may be one of Canada's next great folk-pop songwriters. Neil's favourite cut: You Take The Wheel
· Joni Mitchell ~ Shine
Just when we were afraid we'd never hear a new collection of songs from this musical legend, Joni surprises with another brilliant round. The opening track is a ten minute long instrumental describing a week in her life (Thursday the bear arrives!), Big Yellow Taxi is given a loving facelift, and the rest is a signature collection of social commentaries that hit you between the eyes while they lull you with their beauty.
· Michael Bublé ~ Call Me Irresponsible
Timeless songs from Johnny Mercer, Sammy Cahn, Harold Arlen, Leonard Cohen, Eric Clapton & a couple of Michael originals all beautifully delivered by this golden throated Canadian crooner. Smooth, seductive night club music faultlessly executed.
· Arcade Fire ~ Neon Bible
Think Apocalypse Now. This Montreal indie-rock Septet has become a world-wide supergroup with their ominous, exhilarating, big, broad, dark churning ocean of sound. There is a lavish majesty, almost cinematic, that matches their nervy earnestness & passion. Very David Byrnes, very David Bowie bolstered by immense church organs, strings, horns & voices. Impress your kids, be aware of this powerful 'here & now' epic rock.
· Basia Bulat ~ Oh, My Darling
A young girl from Toronto who reminds us of early McGarrigles. Sweet folksy pop sound with a 'spark' that grows on you after a few spins & songs that you want to sing along to. The media are saying this girl is 'the next big thing' so pick up a copy and you can be ahead of the game! Meet Basia: Basia's Home Page
· Kim Mitchell ~ Ain't Life Amazing
This is pure summer party music ... play it loud and serve a tub of ice cold beer alongside. Invite all your friends and don't forget the neighbors, so they can't complain about the noise. This is the first CD of new material in 8 years from Sarnia's '70's Max Webster king. Dancing mandatory!
· Lori Cullen ~ Buttercup Bugle
We love Lori, her unique smooth & easy to like voice is a joy to listen to. On this her 4th solo CD of soft & inviting tunes she is accompanied by Kurt Swinghammer & The True North Brass Quintet. Sounds strange? Works beautifully. It's a nod to sixties style arrangements with tunes that will stay with you {as always with Lori's CDs} long after the fire dies down. Listen here: Lori Sings
· Neil Young ~ Live At Massey Hall, 1971
For all you closet Neil Young fans who only have Harvest Moon in your collection, here's one that will surely please you. A voice that will break your heart, and hearing Old Man played for the first time in front of a major audience (no early reaction tells you they've never heard it before) makes the recording feel like an important piece of Canadian musical history ... which it is!
· Carol Welsman ~ Carol WelsmanCarol is an incredibly talented multi-lingual jazz singer and pianist who really hasn't enjoyed the fame she deserves. Perhaps this self-titled (albeit 7th) recording will bring her to the forefront. It's a great collection of tunes and Judy's favourite Carol recording since her debut CD many years ago.
