October 2012 Issue #58

Join us, for a "Creative Conversation"

Creative Conversations

There are a variety of issues and opportunities facing Lincoln's creative class, an arts community that generates more than $56 million dollars in economic activity, and has well over a thousand full-time, and hundreds more part-time workers. We are a vital and vibrant component of what makes Lincoln such a good place to live. And while each of us has our own discipline-visual or performance-we are united by common concerns.

It's time to take some of the creativity we invest in our art and address those concerns, and talk about what we might do to insure that the arts community has a place at the table whenever Lincoln is planning its future or celebrating its past. To spend a little time creating and supporting ideas that help define us as a community, build audiences for every discipline, and celebrate our contributions to a more engaged, fuller life.

In honor of Arts & Humanities Month and with the help of the Americans for the Arts, the Lincoln Arts Council is hosting a series of Creative Conversation gatherings at the Mill coffeehouse at 8th and P Street. Beginning at 8:45 AM on Friday, October 5th and 12th we encourage you to bring your creativity and intellect to a series of informal but focused conversations. We envision an agenda and outcomes set by the group, with the only boundaries being an arts focus. This is your opportunity to help yourself by engaging the larger arts community. This is an opportunity to invest, an opportunity to grow, an opportunity to contribute. Join us.

Lincoln Arts Festival 2012 Take a beautiful, sunny weekend, add a Husker win, artists from all over the country and thirteen thousand people-and you have the 2012 Lincoln Arts Festival. Those who attended enjoyed the artists and found a lot of things to love and take home. We had a very well attended Patron Sponsor Breakfast to kick off the festival. Lots of smiles came from the Patron Sponsors as donated art was raffled, and many more smiles as we raffled more art to festival attendees at the Information tent.

Our conversations with artists indicated it was a great year for their sales and many asked to come back. Of course, that's the jury's business, but many are local favorites and we expect to see them again. This year the music from Barger & Pipher, Toasted Ponies, the Fab-Tones and the Southpaw Bluegrass Band kept the entertainment pavilion nearly full. Our food vendors, Kettle Korn, the Nut Hutte, Dawgfather Grille and A La Carte reported strong sales for both days. We've been waiting for a good hot dog vendor and Dawgfather rocked. And what can you say about the most highly rated food truck in town, A La Carte. Many people raved about how good the food was, and many more thanked us that prices were so reasonable they could feed the whole family.

We expected things to slow down a little at kick-off time on Saturday, but 2:30 came and went with the festival going full-tilt. Happy artists and happy attendees are what make our festival so successful, and this year was exceptional. We're already making plans for improvement next year, so get us on your 2013 calendar for September 28th and 29th.

Volunteers ROCK!

Lincoln Arts Festival Volunteer-in-training

A HUGE Thank You to all of the volunteers for your help in making the 2012 Lincoln Arts Festival a huge success!  Over 50 volunteers helped to make this year's festival run smooth like butter! It was a fun and busy weekend and from all of the feedback we have received it was mostly with respect to the volunteers that made the weekend so enjoyable, not only for the public but for the artists. From the SetUp/TearDown crew, who used their strong muscles to set up and tear down tents and move totes to and fro, to the Boothsitters, who were willing and ready to give the artists a break from their booths at any point in time, to those of you who were being bombarded by kids ready to get creative in the kids tent....You all did a wonderful job!!! We love our volunteers and are grateful that you were willing to donate your time, with smiles on your faces, to help out with the Lincoln Arts Festival.

Thanks again you for your time.

To those of you who now realize that you missed out on the volunteering opportunity of a lifetime....No worries there is always next year! To be added to the list of names to contact for Lincoln Arts Council volunteer opportunities please email your contact information to the recruiter and coordinator of volunteers, the Lincoln Arts Council AmeriCorps member, Mollie Magnuson, at [email protected].

Thank-you to Lincoln Arts Festival Sponsors

2011 Lincoln Arts Festival The Lincoln Arts Festival provided a fun filled weekend made possible by generous corporate and individual support; we couldn't do it without a team of sponsors.  We would like to show gratitude to Husker Auto our Event Sponsor.  A special thanks goes out to Ameritas, who has sponsored the festival for three years, this year as the Patron Program Sponsor.  Shopko Stores is also a returning sponsor with five years of support for the Lincoln Arts Festival. These corporate leaders truly understand the value of providing arts programming that is accessible to all, helping to create vibrancy in our community. We are so appreciative!

Approximately 600 kids enjoyed our Arts for Kids tent where they created buttons, robots, and paintings, and danced and sung alongside superstar Jim King. The Kinder Porter Scott Family Foundation has supported these activities for four years, bringing smiles to children and their families. New to sponsorship this year is the Sowers Club who also sponsored the Arts for Kids tent.

Live, local musicians entertained festival-goers thanks to the generosity of Sandhills Publishing, Madonna, Amtrak, Wells Fargo, Blue Cross Blues Shield of Nebraska, Grand Manse and U.S. Property, and the Berman Music Foundation. Thanks also to Catholic Health Initiatives for supporting the Patron Program. Target, Russ's Market, and Sam's Club of Lincoln provided in-kind support of artist hospitality.

On behalf of the Lincoln Arts Council board and staff, and the 13.000 people who attended the festival - THANK YOU!
