February 2012 Issue #50

Call for Artist: 2012 Mayor's Arts Awards

Each year, the Lincoln Arts Council partners with the Mayor's Office to present the Mayor's Arts Awards to honor the best and brightest of the past year's art scene. And yes, there is an actual "award" presented at the event to the winners: not a stylized gold statue or a certificate off some backroom laser printer, but an actual piece of art created exclusively for this occasion.

We'd like YOU to consider creating these works of art.

If your work is chosen by our panel of arts professionals, you'll join an elite list of previous award artists, which includes Joe Ruffo, Rob Hillestad, Carol DeVall, Karen Kunc, and Keith Jacobshagen. You'll also have your work shown in some of Lincoln's finest homes. This year's theme is "Destination: ARTS" and includes maps. If your current work seems appropriate, send a proposal to
doug@artscene.org by February 15th. You can find more information, including a list of due dates, on our website by clicking here. Good Luck!

Attention Lincoln Artists!
The Lincoln Arts Festival wants YOU!

2012 Lincoln Arts Festival In the last days of September, for one fine fall weekend out of the year, more than 100 artists come together in the capital city to show their art in a fun and festive atmosphere. Usually, one in three is a local or regional artist. This year, we think you might like to join us. We ordered up fine weather, great music and huge crowds. This year's Lincoln Arts Festival will be September 22 and 23.

Beginning Monday, February 6, visit
www.zapplication.org for more information on our festival (and many others) and to get an application. If you've never sold in the festival setting before, apply for our Emerging Artist position. The submission window will be open for several months, but don't let the opportunity to have a great time sharing and selling your art pass you by.

Learning Through the Arts
Carrie Strope & Riley Elementary

On January 25, Carrie Strope began her artist-in-residency session at Riley Elementary. During this residency, the second- and third-grade students are learning about the basic history and process of glass fusing. The students are working together to create an abstract fused glass window installation. The installation will be a compilation of 4"x4" glass tiles that are designed and handcrafted by each student.  More...
