Lincoln Arts Council Project Grant Awards Announced

The Lincoln Arts Council is excited to announce the funding of eight inspiring projects that will enrich our community in 2012. Funding for the 2012 LAC Project Grants is provided by the Ken Good Community Beautification Endowment and the Lincoln Foundation Community Arts Endowment Fund.

This year's submissions were very competitive! We were especially impressed at the quality of the project grant proposals. Hats off to the 2012 LAC Project Grant Award winners!  More...

Before you get too involved with 2012's adventures, you need to help us remember what was wonderful about 2011. In a very challenging year, the arts in Lincoln were vibrant - noisy, messy, beautiful and unique. What was your favorite? Who overcame all odds? Who was the rock; who was there, once again, to help others reach for the stars?

Celebrating excellence and accomplishment in the arts community is a great joy, but it requires your help. On January 13th nominations will close for the Mayor's Arts Awards and we need your input. Go to ArtScene.org and download the nomination form. Nominating is easy and can be done quickly on your home computer; but, we need to hear from you by the thirteenth! More...

A shiny new home for the Lincoln Arts Council

The Lincoln Arts Council

"Everything changes; nothing remains without change." These ancient words of the Buddha continue to ring true almost 2,500 years after they were spoken.

Change has also come to the Lincoln Arts Council. We've relocated to a new facility! You can now find us at 1701 South 17th Street, suite 1A. In late 2011 we received a unique opportunity to move to a new space by the Sower's Club of Lincoln. This new space will allow the LAC to give the green light to projects that have been on the back burner.

To celebrate, we're inviting everyone to join us at our new office on Thursday, January 26th from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. for an open house. There will be something spirited, savory and sweet, plus lots of great conversation! No R.S.V.P. needed, just drop by. Hope to see you there!  More...

Learning Through the Arts in 2012
Artists in Residence at Lincoln Public Schools

We are thrilled to announce the approval of funding from the Nebraska Arts Council for a Artists in Schools/Communities Residency Program Sponsor Grant.  The grant will support residencies for two local artists, Carrie Strope and Madison Simmons, at Riley Elementary School and Park Middle School this winter.

Carrie Strope's residency will take place at Riley Elementary beginning in January of 2012. Carrie will introduce the basic history and process of glass fusing to the 2nd and 3rd grade students. The students will be collaborating to create an abstract fused glass window installation. The installation will be a compilation of glass fused tiles that are designed and handcrafted by each student.  More...

Raise Your Glass for LAC
Mark your calendar for a special evening out, and raise a glass for artists in the schools.

Got any happy hour plans for Thursday, January 19? Here's a suggestion...

Cliff's Lounge is hosting the Giving Spirits outing on the evening of January 19. Giving Spirits is the brainchild of Lori Armiger, who found a great way to mix her passion for philanthropy with a fun evening out with friends. On the third Thursday of each month from 5-8pm, Giving Spirits partners a local establishment with a local organization to raise funds for their cause. Your $10 cover gets you one complimentary drink, and 100% of the proceeds go to the beneficiary.  More...

January Art Events

Happy New Year!  It's time for New Years resolutions, and we think that taking in more art is a wonderful goal to strive for.  And Lincoln is going to deliver some great art this January.

On First Friday, January 6th, LUX Center for the Arts will host an opening reception for "Rock, Paper, Scissors" starting at 5pm.  The International Quilt Study Center and Museum will also be opening the "Tribute to Ardis James" exhibition that evening.  Tugboat Gallery will be opening their January show "Exquisite Slop Swap" with a reception at 7pm.  And The Burkholder Project is celebrating 25 years with 100 artists displaying on three levels of galleries in one building.  It all adds up to one impressive show they are simply calling the "25th Anniversary Show".

For even more on what's happening on First Friday, check out our January 2012 First Friday guide.

There are lots of great performing arts you can resolve to see as well.  Lincoln's Symphony Orchestra presents "Lemony Snicket" on the 22nd, their second family concert of the season.  Arts for the Soul will be hosting the internationally known Romm Trio at First Presbyterian on the 22nd as well.

Do you prefer to perform yourself?  The Metropolitan Opera is hosting auditions January 14th, 10:30am at Nebraska Wesleyan University.  Who knows?  Maybe you could be the next opera super-star!

Other organizations with events this January:
Don't see your art organization's event here?  That's because we need a profile created on our website, ArtScene.org.  Fill out a bio, add events to our calendar by the 25th, and get your contributions to Lincoln's art scene noticed!
