Reach for the Stars

 Membership Drive

This month help the Lincoln Arts Council "Reach for the Stars" by supporting the AmeriCorps staff. These hard working young women, Emily and Mollie, have devoted this year to serving the Lincoln Arts Council for their national community service as part of their
AmeriCorps Pledge:

I will get things done for America - to make our people safer, smarter, and healthier.
I will bring Americans together to strengthen our communities.
Faced with apathy, I will take action.
Faced with conflict, I will seek common ground.
Faced with adversity, I will persevere.
I will carry this commitment with me this year and beyond.
I am an AmeriCorps member, and I will get things done.

Both talented gals come from artistic backgrounds from performing to visual arts. They bring passion, dedication and numerous skills to their jobs at LAC. Every dollar you donate to this campaign results in $5 of additional support for the Lincoln Arts Council to continue to enrich our AmeriCorps staffing. Please donate today

City Election Information

LAC Voter GuideLincoln will have its Primary Election on April 5th, and its General Election on May 3rd for city and school elected officials. We think the candidates for mayor and city council should tell us their positions and priorities on the arts in Lincoln. To help you decide, the Lincoln Arts Council will contact each candidate and ask for their information and post it on our website in April. If the arts holds a special place in your heart, then you'll want to check back then with our website, ArtScene.org, for your candidate's position. Please vote!

Artist Spotlight: Nancy Teague
Nancy Teague
It is amazing how the power of light on objects can cause the everyday, the flawed, or the time-worn to reflect new life or significance. Do you know this same dynamic can happen in our lives? -Artist Statement, Nancy Teague

Nancy Teague's passion for art is hard to miss.  She is passionate about her work as an artist, arts in the community, arts education, and educating the public on the power of the arts in our everyday lives. This passion radiates from her like sunlight, much like the light that permeates her paintings.

Nancy paints still lifes of ordinary objects she happens upon in small towns in Nebraska. She photographs the objects in natural light and takes the photos back to her studio where she studies the impact the light has on the objects. Her paintings explore the nuances in the reflection of the light and shadows cast by the objects. Nancy says "In some ways I feel like an explorer and a recorder of impacting moments of light".

 March Art Events

Can you believe it?  Spring is just around the corner!  We're super excited to hang up our coats, venture out, and catch some art around town.  Here's what we're counting on seeing:  St. Marks will be hosting the St. Marks UMC Arts and Craft Show, including our very own Executive Volunteer, 2011 Mayor's Arts Awards event sponsor, the artist behind "Nature's Beauty" and all-around nice guy, Jerry Hall.  Red Theatre will present their collective take on Hamlet with "Red Hamlet."  Kiechel Fine Art is currently exhibiting "Shared Histories: Anthony Benton Gude."  And, on First Friday, March 4, 2011, Gallery Nine will host "Louder than Sirens: New Work by Meghan Stratman."  There is much more to see each First Friday, hopefully the cold weather will stay away this month!  Prepare with the Lincoln Arts Council's First Friday Guide for all the details.

Other organizations with events this March:
Don't see your art organization's event here?  That's because we need a profile created on our website, ArtScene.org.  Fill out a bio, add events to our calendar by the 25th, and get your contributions to Lincoln's art scene noticed!

And Now, Your Moment of Artistic Zen.

Moment of Zen - March 2011 - Google Art Project

Prepare to spend the next hour browsing through art museums throughout the world, thanks to the Google Art Project.  They've taken their already amazing Street View technology, and found a really great way to apply it to the art world.  Be sure to check out the Behind the Scenes video to get a glimpse on how this all came together.  Thanks Kelly for sending this our way!
