  Lincoln Arts Council Recognized!

Americans for the Arts The Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) is an independent federal agency created to engage Americans of all ages and backgrounds in volunteer service through three umbrella organizations: AmeriCorps, Learn and Serve America, and Senior Corps.

As part of its Arts Advocacy Day activities, the CNCS is calling for the creation of an "Artist Corps." The Artist Corps would support programs administered by, or partnered with nonprofit community organizations that place skilled artists in the community to address unmet community needs through education, performances and arts-related activities.

They cite successful programs supporting the arts using examples from five different states. They recognized the Lincoln Arts Council for its use of the AmeriCorps Vista Program to fund staff in support of arts-programming and community outreach initiatives.

We are very proud of our AmeriCorps staff. Their energy and talent have taken the Lincoln Arts Council to new levels of service to the arts community. We're also glad that their accomplishments have been recognized at the national level. Yeah team!

"Arts in Crisis": A John F. Kennedy Center Initiative: 50 State Tour!

The Arts in CrisisMichael Kaiser, President of the Kennedy Center has embarked on a 50 state tour with a message addressing the challenges facing non-profit performing arts organizations today through such areas as fundraising, building more effective Boards, budgeting, and marketing.

Now in its second year, the tour comes to Nebraska on May 5th, hosted by the Nebraska Arts Council, the Lincoln Arts Council, Nebraskans for the Arts, and the Lied Center for Performing Arts. From 9:00 AM to Noon, Mr. Kaiser will meet with leaders of the arts community and the public to discuss arts in the current economy and specific survival tactics. Private interviews with the press, corporate and government leaders will follow. Michael Kaiser's very well received book, "The Art of the Turnaround, Creating and Maintaining Healthy Arts Organizations" will be available.

Of interest to anyone involved with the arts, this event will be of particular interest to those who are responsible for preserving the performing arts in these exceptionally difficult times. The event is free and open to the public, but reservations are required. Inquiries and reservations should be made to the Lincoln Arts Council at 434-2787, or email Kaiser@artscene.org.

Artist Spotlight

Daniel KubertDaniel Kubert's Beautifully Imperfect Journey

Beautifully imperfect. These are the words Daniel Kubert uses to describe his art. For a man whose career has taken him on a journey from discovering musical theatre at Lincoln High School, to dancing in the world renowned Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company in New York and around the world, back to Lincoln as an independent artist, "beautifully imperfect" are simply the perfect words.

Sitting at D Beans Coffee on 11th and G in Lincoln surrounded by Kubert's stunning artwork on the walls, he talks about his upcoming performance, "The Way of the Cross," at First Plymouth Church on Friday, April 2. He describes the narrative of the piece and his role as the Centurion carrying out the crucifixion of Christ. As he talks about the entwinement of movement, text, and symbolic set pieces there is a passion and excitement in his voice that only exists in the voice of a true artist with a lifetime of investment in his craft.  More...

It's Spring... Watch Your Donations Grow!
AmeriCorps
This month donate and give special kudos to our AmeriCorps staff members, who work for the Lincoln Arts Council and our arts community.   These dedicated "kids" provide community service for nonprofits, while honing their own life skills.  Through their hard work we have been able to provide after school arts programs for underserved youth, build a stronger social media network, and produce the National Arts Program each year.

Every dollar you donate to our AmeriCorps campaign results in $5 of additional support.  Visit our online donation page this month to contribute to the matched fund.

So, celebrate spring, see your dollars multiply and the rejuvenation that our AmeriCorps staff brings to the arts. Donate today!

Screen Ink
Everyone makes mistakes! But, an artist knows that there are never really mistakes, and often "happy mistakes". On April 2nd Screen Ink and Doe Eyed Design will be opening "F*CK UP: A Test Print Exhibit" to illustrate this very concept.

Because the process is entirely spontaneous and unplanned, imperfections and accidents are embraced rather than shunned. "F*CK UP" is an art show that illuminates this emerging art form with a collection of prints from a wide range of international artists, both celebrated and up-and-coming. Test prints are a mix of art and design, individuality and mass production, inspiration and collection, planned and impromptu.

Test prints are guaranteed one-of-a-kind screen-prints made up of layered bits and pieces from many gig posters and art prints. Dozens of colors are printed on top of one another to create abstract pieces of art.

The exhibit will take place at Screen Ink. Friday, April 2nd from 7:00pm-11:00pm. Screen Ink is located downtown at 416 South 11th Street.

Illusion Glass
Illusion Glass manager, Jose Salas III, sees "each new First Friday Art Crawl as another chance to raise the bar and provide artistically multi-faceted entertainment for the downtown Lincoln area".

The art displayed at Illusion glass is nothing short of "multi-faceted". There is an abundance of edgy and interesting art in the front of the shop that not enough people know about, art work that definitely deserves some attention.

Illusion Glass supports local artists in Nebraska by offering artists a free and professional space to exhibit their work. Experience something new and different in the First Friday art walk. You can attend Illusion's First Friday reception April 2nd from 7 to 9 p.m. while enjoying live music and complimentary drinks, or view the art during regular hours from 11am - 9pm, 7 days a week.  Illusion Glass is located at 1028 'O' Street.

Tugboat Gallery
Tugboat Gallery proudly presents "Triumvirate" featuring The Lincoln Art Council's own Johanna Sawyer along with Josh Powell and Iva Laterza. There will be an opening reception on First Friday April 2nd, and the exhibit will run through April 30th, 2010.

"Triumvirate" features three young artists making paintings and collages that explore markedly different visual worldviews:  geometric, intuitive organic rhythms, and found vintage imagery to express current issues.

Tugboat Gallery is located at 116 N. 14th Street, Lincoln NE - second story above Gomez Art Supply.  Gallery hours are Monday-Friday 10-6, Saturday 12-5 and Sunday 2-5.  Questions are answered by Gomez Art Supply at 402-477-6200.  Elevator entrance at 1410 'O' Street.
