The
Lincoln Arts Council...in with the new!
"Here's
to the bright New Year, and a fond farewell to the old; here's to the things
that are yet to come, and to the memories that we hold." - Anonymous
Happy New Year!
As we all know, 2009 was an interesting and sometimes difficult year for
the arts. Several Lincoln artists were
faced with many challenges such as reduced funding or lack of affordable space
and managed to stay resilient. Artists continued to create, survive and enhance
our lives and community. When the going
gets tough, artists roll up their sleeves and keep making art! That creativity is what keeps the arts alive
in Lincoln. Thank you to all Lincoln
artists and to everyone who supported the arts in 2009, whether it be through a
Lincoln Arts Council sponsorship, the purchase of a piece of art from a gallery
or buying a ticket to the local theatre.
Here is wishing you all a wonderful, creative and prosperous 2010 from
the Lincoln Arts Council.

Focus on Performing Arts

Please join LAFTA (Lincoln Association for Traditional
Arts) as they present Lonesome Traveler on January 23rd, 7:30 p.m. at the 7th
Street Loft, located on at 7th and K Streets on the third floor of
Cornhusker Place. Lonesome Traveler is a

Lonesome Traveler second place finishes in both the Telluride and Rockygrass band

or visit www.lafta.net.
The Lincoln Arts Council is
very proud to have an ongoing relationship with AmeriCorps, a national service
organization. The following article is
provided by one of our AmeriCorps members, Beckie Enyeart.
In a split-level duplex on 11th
and F streets, a surprising community has emerged. The Clawfoot House is the home of Lincoln's own songbird Ember Schrag, but also serves as a community concert
venue.
In 2009 the Clawfoot House
hosted several events with artists coming from around the country and even
globally, with some coming from as far as Denmark. The Clawfoot House provides a home for a
variety of different shows and talents including concerts, puppet shows, play
readings, and ten installments of the Clawfoot Salon, a monthly gathering and
educational series for women musicians. The Clawfoot House is quickly becoming
a venue with a reputation for booking high quality performers in a home-like
setting.
Musician and occupant Ember
Schrag said the Clawfoot House was born after her daughter Lillian was
born. It was harder for her to get out
to perform and to see others. She craved the kinds of attributes the Clawfoot
House provides, so she created such a place in her own living room. More... |

And Now, Your Moment of Artistic Zen.
National Mentoring Month: The Arts in Action with TeamMates "TeamMates has seen first-hand the benefit the arts bring to youth and their mentors.
The arts build a conversation around what youth do well and encourage
them to discover the strengths and talents within," said Suzanne Hince, Executive Director of TeamMates. The TeamMates Mentoring Program has received funding from the Nebraska Arts Council for intergenerational activities in the arts since 2006. In 2009, youth/adult teams participated in digital filmmaking workshops in Lincoln, Hebron, Plainview, Minden, Doniphan, North Platte and Columbus. TeamMates'
commitment to provide opportunities in the arts for its youth/adult
teams is based in part on research by Dr. Peter Benson and the Search
Institute that shows 54 percent of youth from 12 to 17 identify the
creative arts as their "spark." TeamMates
mentors encourage youth to pursue their dreams and full potential
through their sparks, skills and self-identified assets such as those
in the creative arts. In 1991, Tom and Nancy Osborne founded the TeamMates Mentoring Program to provide support and encouragement to school age youth. Today, TeamMates serves over 4,000 youth in 114 communities throughout Nebraska. For more information on TeamMates or its activities in the arts, please contact Allyson Horne at 402-525-2236 or 1-877-531-8326.
