Nature's Beauty

Jerry HallThis month we want to congratulate our number one, four-year volunteer of the Lincoln Arts Council, Jerry Hall (not Mick Jagger's ex-wife Jerry Hall).   Our Jerry is a retired Chief Engineer of the Veteran's Affairs Medical Center.   He is a quiet, generous man, prone to cowboy belts, animal motif sweatshirts, and warm hugs all around at the end of his work day.  Jerry has been married to Annette for 38 years and boasts 3 grown, successful kids.

Over the last couple of years Jerry has discovered a passion and talent for Prismacolor Pencil and the images of wildlife.  Come and celebrate Jerry's show "Nature's Beauty" at the Burkholder Project.  We hope you will thank him for the dedicated service he does for our arts community. You can view his drawings from December 2, 2009 through January 30, 2010.  There will be artist receptions on December 4 and January 8th from 7-9 p.m.

And by the way, Jerry...to us, you are Nature's Beauty.

2009 Lincoln Arts Festival Patron Sponsor Nebraska Heart Institute Gives Back

During difficult economic times, it's too easy to reduce support; however, disease, hunger, homelessness and a need for education, to name a few, do not take an economic break.  Nebraska Heart Gives Back has identified opportunities where NHI employees can work together with other businesses and their staffs to organize, energize and give back to our community.  "We believe at NH that a 'negative' economy and internal cost adjustments cannot be done at the expense of those in need," says Thomas Burnell, chief executive officer for the Nebraska Heart Institute & Heart Hospital.  "Now is the time to dig deep into our hearts, assess our priorities and allocate time and resources to continue to make a difference in the lives of those who depend on all of us for support."

The "Toys For Tots" program, sponsored by the United States Marine Corp, has been working with communities for several years to enlist donations of toys for underprivileged children.  This year, Nebraska Heart made a commitment to serve as the primary drop-off point for donations.  Additionally, our goal was to work with local businesses to collect toys for the more than 6,000 Lincoln children identified as underprivileged.

Support their generous spirit of giving back to the community by joining in their Toys for Tots campaign. Visit the Nebraska Heart website for more information.

Lincoln Arts Council Annual Report Now Available Online

It's been a busy and productive year at the Lincoln Arts Council.  Our accomplishments and also some notes about the future are in our 2008-2009 LAC Annual Report.  Please take a moment to find out what we've been up to and as always, give us a call if you have questions or ideas.

At the Lincoln Arts Council, one of our focuses is the professional development of individuals in the arts community.  Part of the way we fulfill this is through our commitment to working with AmeriCorps and interns.  Graphic design intern, Amy Amgwert was vital in creating the design and assuring the  completion of our annual report.   Thanks, Amy, for sharing your talents with the Lincoln Arts Council!

This month, extraordinary Lincoln Arts Council volunteer Jerry Hall will have an exhibition at The Burkholder Project.  "Nature's Beauty" is a display of some of the finest images of nature captured by Primsacolor Pencil.  Please stop by and see Jerry's work, from 7:00 to 9:00 pm on December 4th and January 8th.  This is Jerry's studio debut and we are very proud of him!

International Quilt Study Center & Museum
Quilts of 21 contemporary artists will be on display at the International Quilt Study Center & Museum (IQSC) in the new exhibition "Perspectives: Art, Craft, Design, and the Studio Quilt" showing from November 21, 2009 through May 9, 2010. The exhibition assembles quilts from the permanent collection of the IQSC complemented by several related works in various mediums owned by local collectors.

Lincoln resident Michael James, internationally recognized studio quilter and chair of UNL's Department of Textiles, Clothing and Design, and fellow fiber artist and New York City-based art critic Sandra Sider curated the exhibition and wrote the accompanying catalog. Works in the exhibition are from five countries and range from abstract ("Oil Rig" by Jo Budd) to whimsically concrete ("Lake Superior Stick Bed and Quilt" by Theresa Hancock Mangat).

One aspect of the exhibition focuses on the relation of today's art to the long history and nature of the quilting tradition. The exhibition challenges visitors to form their own perspectives on art, craft, and design.

Modern Arts Midwest
Modern Arts Midwest will host the oil paintings of Lincoln artist Stephen Dinsmore in the "Selected Paintings" show this December. Dinsmore explores a wide variety of subjects in this new work such as still life, urban landscape and fascinating interiors. While the subjects are diverse, the paintings all share Dinsmore's mastery of the oil medium with thick brush strokes and expressionistic style. The end result is paintings that remind viewers of familiar scenes and places that each tell a unique story.

Additionally, the 5th Annual Small Works Show features 30 artists offering prestigious gifts at reasonable prices.  More information can be found on Modern Arts Midwest's website.

ARTitudes Inc.
The Artitudes Inc. "Holiday Art Show and Sale" will be December 4 - 6.  The hours are Friday 4pm to 9pm, Saturday 10am to 5pm and Sunday 11am to 4pm.  Part of the proceeds from the show will benefit the Lincoln Food Bank Backpack Program.  The Show will be in the former Tool House on the Northeast corner of 8th and Q in Lincoln's Haymarket.

ARTitudes, Inc. is a group of local artists organized for the purpose of giving outstanding local artists and craftspeople a venue for showing and selling their artwork. Their goal is to provide a showcase and sales outlet for these artists and partnering with Lincoln-based charities by donating a percentage of all sales to the chosen charity partner at our events.  This year, local artist Deanna Long will be participating.  Deanna was part of the outstanding team of volunteers for the 2009 Lincoln Arts Festival.  More information can be found at Artitude Inc.'s website.

In 1992 David Sedaris, playwright, comic, and wickedly funny commentator on National Public Radio, wrote an uproarious essay based on his ultimate nightmare: working as a Santaland Elf at Macy's in New York City.  The plot is built around the musings of a single character, "a writer" who begins the play by scoffing at a classified ad for seasonal employment as an elf at Macys.  A newcomer to New York, the character has not achieved the fame and fortune he had dreamed of, and is forced to take anything to cover the rent. From the process of filling out applications to the final moments of Christmas Eve, audiences are taken on a ride through the outlandish world of Santaland and Sedaris' deft dissection of Christmas.
