The 2009 Lincoln Arts Festival
Let the ARTS carry
you away at the ninth annual Lincoln Arts Festival on September 26 and 27 at
SouthPointe Pavilions located at 27th and Pine Lake Roads. The Festival offers fabulous art works by
nearly 100 artists perfect for you - work or at home - or for a unique gift. Toe-tapping music performed by No Better
Cause, Release Time, and others provides great free entertainment while
shopping and relaxing. New this year is
a kid's interactive art area where budding artists can create refrigerator
masterpieces. Festival hours are from

LUX Center for the Arts and Nebraska Wesleyan University present, Art
of Fine Craft: [kuh-nek-tiv], October 1-2, 2009. This biennial
conference provides an opportunity for students, educators, artists,
and collectors to learn about emerging and historical craft traditions
through exhibitions, demonstrations, and lectures. Early bird
registration ($85 two day pass and $65 student two day pass) ends

Focus on Performing Arts
They practice politics by every means possible. They are men and women consumed by the demands of loyalty, power, and violence. Their stories will unfold as The Flatwater Shakespeare Company presents the tragedy of "Julius Caesar" in the open-air Swan Theatre at Wyuka Cemetery and Park, 3600 O Street in Lincoln, beginning Thursday, September 10, at 7:30 p.m. Performances continue Friday - Sunday, September 11-13; and Thursdays - Sundays, September 17-20 and 24-27.
Bob Hall's modern day production features Brad Boesen as Brutus,
one-time ally of Caesar, who must decide whether to turn against his friend and
mentor. Nathan Weiss plays Cassius, the
sly but passionate defender of the old order.
Rob Burt is Antony, Caesar's underestimated but charismatic
supporter. Julie Kinkennon appears as
Portia, Brutus's wife, and Mary Bolin as Calpurnia, wife to Caesar. Dick Nielsen plays the flawed and magnificent

The PlainSong Folk Festival celebrates it's 8th year at the Sprague Community Center 17490 SW 14th Street, Martell NE (click here for map) on Saturday, September 26, 2009 from 1 to 9 p.m.
This year, PlainSong is excited to feature the talent of renowned singer/songwriter Christine Lavin, who will also host a songwriting workshop. Other performers this year include Small Potatoes, Lou and Peter Berryman, Michael Murphy, and Lye Soap. Other events include an authentic Native American Tee-Pee and live flute music, face painting, story telling and artistic activities for children, and a jam-space for those who wish to create their own music.
The mission of the PlainSong Folk Festival is to encourage the performance and presentation of folk music in Nebraska,
to educate the public on the unique cultural and artistic value of folk music, and

Focus on Visual Arts
LUX Center for the Arts presents, "Bound Together", curated by art collector, Karen Duncan and LUX Center board president, Anne Pagel, September 4 - 26. An opening reception will be held from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday, September 4. To coincide with this exhibition, Karen Duncan loaned an eclectic selection from her basket collection for "Selections from the Karen Duncan Basket Collection" that includes pieces from eleven international artists. On September 15 at 6:30 p.m., Karen Duncan will talk about her choices for this exhibition and her experiences collecting baskets. This will be followed by a talk by participating artist, C.A. Michel. LUX Center for the Arts also presents, Slidemeister and Man of Titanium, by woodworker Michael Bauermeister and glass blower Sam Stang. These long time friends have established a reputation as expert craftsmen in their respective media and will exhibit two bodies of work that compliment each other. Fruits of Their Labor, a celebration of artists and their work, is Lux's most important fundraising event of the year. It is a perfect
opportunity to support LUX Center for the Arts, which has helped
thousands of people embrace their inner artist and welcome art into
their life. Guest will receive a handmade gift. The event will be held September 20th from 6 pm to midnight at the Venue Restaurant and Lounge at 70th St and Pioneers Blvd. Suzanne Wise, Executive Director of Nebraska Arts Council will MC the event, and the auctioneers for the evening will be Chip Stanley and William Stibor. The Lentz Center for Asian Culture is pleased to announce its autumn exhibition, "The Arts of
Buddhism" (August 14-December 18, 2009).
The exhibition will include a wide range of Buddhist materials from Japan,
China, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Nepal, Tibet, and Bhutan. It will showcase the Lentz Center's large
collection of sculpture, textiles, paintings, and ritual objects. There will also be examples from private
collections.
The purpose of the
exhibition is to show the different kinds of Buddhism, the varied images of the
Buddha and other important Buddhist figures.
There will be a handout to give general information and explain terms. Illustrative photographs will also be
included.
Buddhism is the
primary religious expression of most of East Asia, of Northeast and of
Southeast Asia. It has spawned a wealth
of images and sacred spaces for the faithful to visit and worship. The Lentz Center exhibition will offer an
opportunity to see some of this rich body of art. The opening reception will be held on
September 4, 2009, 5:00pm-7:30pm.
