Speak Up for the Arts in Lincoln!

Harp playerNow is a great time to let Mayor Beutler know that you think the arts and the Lincoln Arts Council are vitally important to our city's future.  The City of Lincoln funds a small portion of the Lincoln Arts Council's budget and that funding may be in jeopardy.

During these challenging economic times we know how hard it is to balance a budget.  We also know that the arts are part of the solution, because the arts generate revenue.  The Lincoln Arts Mean Business study showed that the arts generate $36 million dollars in economic activity per year, delivering more than $3.4 million in local and state government revenue.

We've made it easy for you to contact the Mayor and the City Council by providing email and website links on our own website.  A good-old fashioned letter would also be an excellent choice.  We've also included some talking points that could be used in your message.  Thanks so much for taking an active role in helping City leadership know that the arts must be supported!

Studio 7 Studio 7 will be showing an exhibit, "Images of Mental Health", beginning May 8th, with an opening reception from 6-9 pm.  In conjunction with Mental Health month, this exhibit is a fascinating look into the mind of mental health using photography, acrylics, mirrors and other mediums.  Artist Chris Schleich also provides brief narratives with each piece to give you a personal perspective into the many aspects of living with a mental illness.  It is a very captivating and revealing exhibit that professionals, families, clients and anyone who is touched by the life of a person living with a mental illness will greatly appreciate.

Each month Studio 7 gives a portion of its proceeds to a non-profit, this month Good Samaritan Center will be the recipient.  Also each month a new artist is given the opportunity to have their work shown at Studio 7, this months artists will be from the Child Guidance Center.  Studio 7 is located in the Parrish studios at 1416 'O' street. (second level).  You can contact Chris Schleich through her website at studio7lincoln.com.  Studio hours are varied, special viewings are available especially this month during the "Images of Mental Health" exhibit.

Kiechel Fine ArtKiechel Fine Art is pleased to announce "La Memoria Del Tiempo", new work by Francisco Souto, on view at Kiechel Fine Art from May 8 through June 26. The opening reception will be held on Friday, May 8th from 6 to 8 p.m. An artist talk is scheduled for the opening reception at 7 p.m..

"La Memoria Del Tiempo" or "The Memory of Time" represents a broad spectrum of Souto's work, chronicling his journey as a printmaker and master of the mezzotint process. Exploring themes of history and the individual, Souto creates a dynamic discourse between his methods, materials, and personal experience.  His most recent work combines the 17th century mezzotint with digital photography, a thoroughly modern interpretation of the age-old printmaking technique.

Francisco Souto was born in Venezuela, and received his BFA from the Herron School of Art in 2000, and his MFA from the Ohio State University in 2002. He is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Art and Art History at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Souto has participated in a wide range of national and international exhibitions throughout the United States, Europe, Venezuela, Russia, Egypt and Japan. The master printmaker has shared his expertise through workshops and as a visiting artist in the US and abroad, garnering several awards and grants. His work is in several public and private collections around the world.
