Artists on the Edge are a group of adults and represent recovering
individuals in the pursuit of wellness. Most are served at The Community
Mental Health Center, CenterPointe, and Cornhusker Place. The artist's have no formal training, only a passion to create. The project is beginning its tenth year and almost 200 individuals are involved. For the past
two years they have had five local exhibits and two touring shows that are
scheduled for Kansas City, Kansas and Oklahoma City venues in 2009. Each Wednesday
evening from 5 - 7 p.m. the writers (1st and 3rd Wed.) and artists (2nd and 4th
Wed.) meet at the F Street Community Center. Working successful artists and
writers facilitate the sessions.
75% of all sales go to the artists and 25% of each sale is retained to sustain the project. Outsider art is exciting,
affordable, and cutting edge in the art community. Museums and collectors have found the work to be more than worthy. The artists will be showing their work at the following locations throughout the year:
- February - St. Mark's Episcopal on the
Campus, 1309 'R' Street
- May/June - A to Z Printing Gallery, 8230

So-Oh
So-Oh Fine Art Gallery is proud to
present some wonderful talent ranging from local and regional to national and internationally
known artists. Gallery owners Renee
Johnson and Gail Erickson have worked very hard to bring in such skill as Deborah Mae Broad's incredibly detailed wood carvings, Peter Yesis's fine paintings in oil, Paul Flinders's whimsycal characters, Steve Graber's photo-real charcoal drawings, Czech sculptor Olbram Zoubek, and too many more to list here. Be sure to visit So-Oh in February, this is a gallery you should not miss out on! A reception is scheduled for First
Friday, February 6th from 5-8 pm. So-Oh gallery is located at 7121 Pioneers Blvd inside of Hangups gallery. For more information, be sure to visit www.so-oh-art.com. A to Z Printing - "Shell Game"An Exhibition of Photographs by R. Wayne. Parsons
The series "Shell Game" consists of color photographs of seashells. While the vivid colors and interesting compositions are of interest in their own right, the use of props and text in many of the images expands the range of the exhibition beyond the purely decorative to include witty and tongue-in-cheek commentary on cultural and social issues. The provocative title of the show references both the playful character of many of the photographs as well as the process of deception involved in making the images - colors have been manipulated, frequently to extremes of hue and saturation. Also, some observers might not consider these images to be photographs at all, as no camera in the traditional sense was used to take the picture. Rather, images were captured by placing the objects on the glass of a flatbed scanner, scanning them, and processing the results in Photoshop. The exhibit will be on display at A to Z Printing, 8230 Cody Dr through February 2009, from 7:30 to 5pm. An opening reception is also scheduled for Thrusday, February 5th from 5 to 7 pm. Be sure to visit the First Friday Gallery openings on our calendar for additional gallery events. | Focus on Performing Arts
