First Plymouth Fine Art Show

First Plymouth Art ShowThe Women's Ministries Board of First-Plymouth Church is sponsoring its second Fine Art Show to raise funds for non-traditional female students.  The show is held in Pilgrim Hall on the main level of the church at 20th and D Streets, in Lincoln.  Artists from Lincoln and the surrounding area will have on display works featuring watercolors, mixed media, photography, ceramic art tile, sculpture, jewelry and more.
For many years the Women's Ministries Board has provided funds for non-traditional female students.  Last year the Art Show enabled us to support three students to continue their education.  We hope to increase the amount given this year through your support of this worthwhile project.
On Friday, Nov. 7, there will be a sneak peek party with refreshments and a special raffle drawing.  The admission to this event is $5.00 and can be paid at the door.  No reservations are required.  Saturday, Nov. 8, the show will be open from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Sunday, Nov. 9, the show will be open from 9:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Sheldon Museum of ArtSheldon Museum of Art
"TRANSactions: Contemporary Latin American and Latino Art" will be on show at the Sheldon Museum of Art November 1 through January 18, 2009.  The exhibit highlights how these artists, despite their differences, have commonly explored the question of identity through their own cultures and life experiences. Organized by the Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego (MCASD), the exhibition celebrates the heterogeneous nature of contemporary Latin American and Latino art.
The exhibition finds connections between Latino artists working within the United States and those from Latin America. A new interpretation evolves that celebrates the diverse nature of contemporary art and deconstructs the obsolete preconceptions of what is Latin American and Latino art.  Thursday, November 6th at 5:30 p.m., artists Enrique Chagoya will present a talk in Ethel S. Abbott Auditorium.  A First Friday Opening Reception will be held Friday, November 7 at 5 to 7 p.m.  And on Tuesday, November 18 at 5:30 p.m., artist Liliana Porter will present a film and talk in the Ethel S. Abbot Auditorium.

UNL OperaUNL Opera presents A Midsummer's night dream
UNL Opera presents Benjamin Britten's wonderful interpretation of the Shakespeare classic, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Thursday Nov. 13 at 12:00 pm, Friday Nov. 14 at 7:30 pm, and Sunday Nov. 16 at 3:00 pm. at the Kimball Recital Hall. Audiences will delight at this contemporary yet accessible, tuneful adaptation of Shakespeare's classic fantasy, replete with enchanted woods, fairies, a wedding party, and a rustic weaver who's turned into a donkey! Unlike so many of Britten's contemporaries, his music is tonal and widely approachable to the general musical audience. Celebrated music critic Terry Teachout put it this way, "For those Mozart-loving opera buffs who long ago wrote off 'contemporary opera' as a lumpy, inedible stew of high-voltage dissonance and hair-tearing angst, the lucidity and charm of A Midsummer Night's Dream are likely to come as an agreeable shock." Don't miss this stellar, all-student production under the direction of Dr. William Shomos, UNL Director of Opera. Dr. Tyler Goodrich White will conduct the UNL Philharmonia. You are sure to be enchanted! Tickets: Adults $20, student/senior $10. Available thru the Lied Center box office, 402/472-4747 or 1-800/432-3231.
