Call To Convention 2008

Attention ALL GSCSNJ Members

CALL TO CONVENTION 2008:

INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA

October 30 - November 3

Every three years, the members of the corporation of Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA) gather at a location, in a meeting assembled, to conduct the business of the National Council (just as GSCSNJ meets once a year in an annual meeting).  As specified by GSUSA's Constitution, each council is allowed one delegate plus an additional delegate for each 1,500 girl members registered as of September 30th of the year preceding the National Council meeting.   As such, GSCSNJ will send 18 delegates to the 2008 National Council Meeting in Indianapolis, Indiana, based on the recommendations of the Convention Delegate Nominating Committee.  The committee will make its recommendations for both girl and adult delegates after careful review of all completed applications.  APPLICATION DEADLINE IS FEBRUARY 1, 2008.  The delegates will be elected at our 2008 Council Annual Meeting.

GSCSNJ will pay for the travel & room accommodations (arranged by GSCSNJ) for elected adult National Council Delegates.  All adult delegates will be responsible for the convention registration fee of $275.  Members are invited to go as official visitors, and may do so at 100% of the cost.

If you are interested in attending GSUSA's 51st National Convention as a Council Delegate, please complete the application and mail to GSCSNJ Convention Delegate Nominating Committee at corporate headquarters 40 Brace Road, Cherry Hill, NJ 08034.  Applications will be available under the What's New section of the council website at www.gscsnj.org after Dec. 12th.

Remember: APPLICATION DEADLINE IS FEBRUARY 1, 2008.
simmons 3 Who's House? Run's House!
Vanessa and Angela Simmons become Girl Scouts.
On November 29 at 10:00 PM (ET/PT) MTV viewers watched Vanessa and Angela Simmons become the newest members of the Girl Scout family! On this episode of "Run's House", cameras follow Vanessa and Angela Simmons - daughters of Rev. Run (aka Joseph Simmons of Run-DMC) as they meet with the Girl Scouts for the first time, discover the opportunities available for giving back and encourage others to join the organization.

Viewers now have the chance to follow Vanessa and Angela online through their official Girl Scouts page- www.girlscouts.org/vanessaandangela- as they spread the word on Entrepreneurship and Financial Literacy Programs at Girl Scouts. The Simmons sisters, Rev Run and their mom Justine, a Girl Scout alumna, have recorded a variety of television Public Service Announcements (PSAs) and interviews for the cause.

"There is a real lack of people encouraging young ladies to be leaders," said Vanessa Simmons, on her new role at the Girl Scouts. "Promoting entrepreneurship and financial literacy is important. Girls need to be business-minded so we have more female leaders in the world." Added Angela Simmons, "And starting now is the best thing girls can do. Selling cookies is a business and you develop those entrepreneurial skills at a young age."

"It's hard to find positive images for girls in the mainstream media," said Kathy Cloninger, CEO of Girl Scouts of the USA. "That's why we are proud to partner with the Simmons family. Vanessa and Angela Simmons have demonstrated what being a positive role model is all about. We hope they will encourage other young professionals to volunteer at the Girl Scouts- whether it's once a month, on weekends, or whatever your schedule allows. Our girls need role models and positive mentors like Vanessa and Angela in their lives."

About Run's House Season 4
At Run's House the laughs, drama and excitement never seem to end. Rev. Run and his wife Justine continue to manage a very bustling household and keep the lives of their 5 children as normal as possible. This season the eldest sibling Vanessa, 24, lands her first acting role on the day-time soap opera "Guiding Light" and finds that perfecting her craft is harder than she thought. Angela, 20, sets her sights on expanding her current magazine insert into a bona-fide fashion/entertainment magazine. The Simmons sisters also look into expanding their sneaker company Pastry into a lifestyle brand complete with apparel. The full season 3 of Run's House reached over 55.4 million viewers across MTV and ranked #1 in its time period among females 12-34.

Pathways to Politics ~ GSCSNJ Destination 2008

Walk with us off the beaten path from July 7-18, 2008, as we hit the "hot spots" from New York City to Washington, D.C. in assembly chambersexploring the history and future of women in leadership, community activism and advocacy in the political arena. This fast-paced, 10 day destination is open to 40 girls in 11th and 12th grade (must have completed 10th grade by June 2008) who are interested in discovering how they can make a difference in the world by exploring a variety of Pathways to Politics.

The Eagleton Institute of Politics and the Center for American Women and Politics (CAWP) at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, NJ  are our program partner and the home base for this destination.  The program includes visits to local, national, and international "hot spots" on the East Coast; Constitution Center,  United Nations and Capital Hill.  Girls will be introduced to our political system, meet some of the high-powered women leading America today, including elected and appointed officials, and learn how to make a difference in our own communities.  Girls will also participate in lively discussions and leadership exercises, including a visit to the Assembly Chamber in the Trenton State House where they will debate and vote on actual bills about issues important to teens. Help spread the word about this New Jersey Destination! Enjoy the benefits and excitement of a destination without the cost of airfare.

For more information, please visit the destination web site at GSUSA and download a Destinations application today or call 856.795.1560 and ask for Laura Zink Marx in the Development Office. The Deadline for applications are February 15, 2008.

Being Healthy and Feeling Good; A Gold Award Project

A senior at Robbinsville High School, Elana Quiroga was inspired to teach younger girls about how to be healthy and feel goodQuiroga about themselves.

Quiroga desided to reach out to younger girls, from third year Brownie girls to Junior girls, about healthy communication, hygiene and exercise for her Gold Award.

"The girls walked away with a better understanding of eating disorders, how to stay healthy and how to feel good about themselves," said Quiroga. "The girls also learned to better communicate with others."

At each of her events Quiroga collected hygiene items to donate to local charities. Not only did the girls who attended Quiroga's program learn about positive personal health but they helped others to achieve healthy habits through their donations.

"I liked being able to help people in need and working with others to improve the world. I learned that I can set goals and accomplish them," said Quiroga.

Elana is just one of the many girls who are successful in achieving the coveted Girl Scout Gold Award. If there is a Girl Scout in your life who is making a difference submit her story to a Girl's View on the GSCSNJ website.
