Keeping Up With The Girl Scout Lingo
The Girl Scout Leadership Experience:
The New Girl Scout Experience is what happens when girls partner with adults to bring the leadership model and philosophy to life!
Leaders
To become leaders, girls should:
* Understand themselves and their values, and use their knowledge and skills to explore the world (Discover)
* Care about, inspire and team with others locally and globally (Connect)
* Act to make the world a better place (Take Action)
Discover, Connect and Take Action are the three keys to leadership.
Girl Scout Leadership Model:
Provides the design for what girls do in Girl Scouting and defines the intended benefits to girls in the form of 15 national outcomes. The model illustrates how adult support strengthens girls' experiences, and highlights each element that must be in place to create a positive impact on girls' lives.

Girl Scout Training Saves Lives |
|
Susan Wilcox, a Daisy and Junior leader put her Girl Scout first aid and CPR training to use Thursday, Nov. 8, 2007, when her six year old daughter Regina fell while going up a flight of steps in their home. Regina fell forward, hit her chest on the top step, then fell backwards on the last two steps, striking her head as she fell to the floor. Fortunately Susan found Regina in time and began CPR with the help of her ten year old daughter and Junior Girl Scout Kerstin.
"When I got to her she was blue, not breathing, unresponsive and going into convulsions. With Kerstin, who really helped as Dad was out of town, and the grace of God, it only took me a minute to bring her back," said Susan. "The ambulance took less than 10 minutes to arrive, but I am quite sure that things would be very different today if I had not recently been to a first aid class."
Susan attended Girl Scout first aid training in June as part of her preparation to continue serving as a Girl Scout Leader. The Girl Scouts of Central & Southern NJ currently provide American Red Cross training, American Heart and American Health and Safety. First aid training covers a wide variety of emergencies and emergency scenes. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is one procedure that everyone should know.
The full course fee, CPR and First Aid, is $40. Through these trainings leaders and Girl Scout members receive education to ensure the safety of girls at meetings, on trips and as in Susan's case, at home.
"I cannot believe she is not seriously bruised on her chest and is not sporting a rather large headache. She is fine and bouncing around the house, a little more than I would like her to today," said Susan. "It looks like the worst of this is my finger that is still pulsating, she bit me when I cleared her airway and of course my nerves that remain shattered still. So for all the griping leaders do about training, I for one am very glad you make us keep our first aid certifications up to date."
Whether you are a parent or simply a friend to Girl Scouting, First aid /CPR training may just save your life, or the life of someone you love. First aid is just that - first! Good first aid training helps you recognize and treat life-threatening conditions and injuries. So ask yourself, is your First Aid or CPR training set to expire? Have you ever been certified? Join Susan and the other "life saving leaders" at GSCSNJ and become certified today.
Don't put off for tomorrow, what you could do today. Register for a First Aid/ CPR training. Below is a list of trainings available through the council:

Family Partnership Contributions |
|
Family Partnership is an opportunity to support Girl Scout programs and Council services. 20% of all troop contributions go directly back to your daughter's troop for trips and other needs not covered by money earning activities. Additionally, Council Cares, a financial assistance program for our girls is supported by your family's contribution. Family Partnership contributions also help build strong programming at our seven camps, during fall festivals and for over 75 programs offered during the first three months of the Girl Scout year! All Family Partnership contributions are also eligible for matching gifts from an employee's workplace.
You can contribute by completing the form coming soon to your home or on our web site. To contribute on-line, go to www.gscsnj.org, visit the Support Our Girls section of the web site. Secure credit card contributions can be made by looking for the purple box that says click here to make a contribution.
A Family Partnership Patch will be sent to all registerd Girls Scouts in each family who contributes to the Family Partnership Campaign.
UNITED WAY CAMPAIGN DESIGNATIONS
If a United Way campaign is being held in your workplace and you would like to designate the Girl Scouts of Central & Southern NJ, please either select one of the former Council agency codes (Girl Scouts of Camden County, Girl Scouts of Delaware Raritan or Girl Scouts of South Jersey Pines) or write in the new Council's name and the corporate address at: 40 Brace Road, Cherry Hill, NJ 08034. The same is true for the State Employee Combined Campaign (SECA). For the Combined Federal Campaign (CFC) the designation code is under Girl Scouts of South Jersey Pines. The CFC new 5-digit code is #45298.
Thank you very much for your support in helping build quality program and services for our new Council. |

Lights, Camera, Action! |
Look for Public Service Announcements soon on our website

For girls, by girls. True to the Girl Scout mission, 16 girls, ages 14 through 17, used their courage, confidence and character to create 30 second Public Service Announcement (PSAs) through a program called "Lights, Camera, Action!" These PSAs were written, preformed and produced by our girls.
This program, was developed as a partnership between GSUSA, PNC Bank and SMP Videos, designed to build self esteem in young women, and followed the GSUSA Uniquely Me model through the Mirror Mirror focus book. Girls learned everything from the process of storyboarding (outlining and scripting the PSA), editing, to working the lights and camera.
You could say the girls learned everything from "lights, camera, action!" |

Reading for Gold
|
|
Stephanie Schwartz of Robbinsville, NJ combined her love for reading with her desire to earn the highest award in Girl Scouting, the Gold Award.
While working at the local library Stephanie noticed a shortage of programming for teens her age.
"I noticed the lack of middle-school program centering on literature. Numerous activities existed for students in elementary grades, but there was nothing for those ages nine through 14. This is an age where an interest in reading is important outside of school; many children begin to equate reading with class work thereby forming a negative connotation," said Schwartz.
Schwartz went on to plan and implement programming that was both interesting and enjoyable for youth in her community.
