Common Spring Projects
Exterior Painting- Nothing freshens up your home in the Spring like a new coat of paint! Painting winter-weathered wood in the Spring also serves to protect it through the rest of the year. Selecting the right combination of exterior shades and colors can really make your home stand out on the street.
Siding & Residing- Siding or residing your home can dramatically change the appearance of your home, adding to its curb appeal. It also represents a substantial investment, so you want to have the siding installed properly. The exterior cladding on a building protects it from the elements. Make sure you are not masking any mold or drainage issues before you add new siding.
Roofing - It is vitally important that you maintain your roof. Replacing damaged shingles and fixing leaks promptly prevents water damage and will help to preserve your home's structure. Regularly inspecting your roof, particularly in the spring, will enable you to see any damage caused by the elements of snow, wind, ice and rain. |

Our Green Tips
Rain Barrels- You can collect rain water to irrigate your garden by purchasing a rain barrel this Spring. These are usually available through your towns DPW. Position a rain barrel under one or more of your downspouts and you can capture the rain as it comes down off your roof. You'd be surprised how much water you can collect this way. If it's raining hard, you'll fill up a 55-gallon rain barrel in an hour or two. Saving water also means saving energy and saving money.
Insulating Your House- Another way to really cut down your heating and cooling bills and save a lot of energy in the process is improving your home's insulation. The first place is you attic. Because heat rises, you lose a lot of it through the roof. One way to know if you need more insulation in your attic is to climb up there. The insulation should extend above the level of the attic floor joists. If you can see the joists, you probably need to add more insulation.
Double Pane Windows- Walls and attics aren't the only parts of your home that need insulation. A pretty sizable portion of your home's perimeter is made up of windows. They can be one of your home's most attractive features. Unfortunately, most windows have a very low R-value, that means they are responsible for a lot of wasted energy. One way to tell if you're losing energy is if you feel a draft when your standing or sitting near one. Double pane windows sandwich the air which reduces heat transfer, keeping cold air outside from sucking the heat out of your house in the winter. Vice versa in the summer. |
