As I'm writing this, the snow is feet deep on the ground, and it's really hard to imagine that the official start of spring is less than six weeks away.
But it is!
Warmer weather, silkier fabrics, bare skin, sandals ... can't wait!
Really, it's fun to start thinking of the new colors and patterns you want to bring in to your wardrobe -- and I'll be sending out my spring trend report very soon, to help you get started -- but before you do that, you'll want to get your closet ready. If you start now, it will be a painless process, and you'll be ready for the new styles and trends spring has to offer. Here's how to do it:
1. Get a handle on what you have right now. With weeks of cold weather ahead, this auditing process is fairly easy. Wear your favorite pieces, of course, but also make an effort to get your less-favorite things out and try them. Try to get creative with it and
turn it into something you love. If you find you can't even get it out of the house in the morning, because you don't LOVE how you feel in it -- say goodbye! You'll never wear it, so find it a new home. Start a bag of giveawas, and put that item in it. Repeat this process with everything in your closet that's for fall/winter.
2. Step back and identify your favorites. Taking a look at what remains, what do you really LOVE?
What do you reach for time and time again and consistently love how you feel in it? See if you can identify the qualities those pieces have in common. It could be color, texture, pattern or shape. Maybe it's the piece's details that grab you. Those commonalities can help guide you when you head into the stores to shop for spring.
3. Get your clothes ready for storage. I often see clients' clothes get put away for the season when they aren't brand-spanking clean. Imagine, though, what it would be like to pull out your clothes next fall and find them all ready to go! Try to find the time to take your clothes to the dry-cleaners, get them hemmed, put them through the laundry -- whatever you need to do to make this process go more smoothly when those clothes come out of storage next fall.
4. Beautify your closet. With less clutter in your closet, you might be surprised how lovely it will look with matching hangers and everything stored properly in its space. (My favorite hangers these days are
these from the
Container Store. Iif you're so inclined, paint the walls of your closet your favorite, or hang a sachet on a hanger or a small framed picture on the door -- whatever
inspires and delights you.5. Get support. You might find this project easier if you have help. Ask a trusted friend to help, or
contact me. I can help you identify what works for you and what doesn't -- and help you understand why, so you're better prepared to bring your style into spring and summer 2010. Enjoy!
