Greetings!
With Halloween behind us -- and the candy mostly gone, too -- we're now approaching the thick of the end-of-year social and holiday season. I can't wait to host my whole family fo r Thanksgiving for the first time and have already figured out what I'll wear. And I'm making plans for a glittering, sparkly, friend-filled New Year's Eve. It's an exciting time of year! But it can be a little stressful, too! One way to take the stress out is by planning ahead for parties and other events. Here's how: Put aside a few minutes and jot down what you have -- and what you still need to get. Your go-to black skirt -- basic but lovely and flattering -- may be the perfect foundation for a fabulous, festive holiday outfit. A bracelet like this one, on the right, or this, can be just the sparkle you need to transform that everyday piece into a chic but I-sure-do-make-it-look-easy ensemble. (And isn't that the best kind? The outfit that says "I just threw this on, and don't I look great?")

What's YOUR personal style?

3 ways to figure out what suits you best
I hear this all the time: "I have no style!" (The words are usually accompanied by a wail.)
Is this you?
- Do you hunt around in the morning for the right outfit, discarding one combination after another because nothing feels like YOU?
- Do you feel overwhelmed when you go shopping -- and walk out of the store without buying a thing?
- Or do you feel overwhelmed ... and buy way too much, more than you can really even wear?
You CAN change this time-consuming and expensive -- heck, it can be downright demoralizing! -- behavior if you take just a little time to find your own personal style.
Try one (or more) of these exercises:
1. Do your research. Buy a handful of magazines and go through each one, tearing out pictures of images you really like. (They can be pictures of anything, not just clothes.) Study the images until some common themes emerge. It might be a rocker theme, or a subtly Goth theme, or a romantic theme. This exercise will help you identify your favorite colors, silhouettes, textures and other key style elements, the crucial building blocks of a signature style. If you're really inspired, make a collage with the results -- that's your inspiration board for this season.
2. Find a "focus group." Ask a few fashion-interested friends for their feedback. They may have been thinking for years that you could use a different haircut or new eyeglass frames and just haven't known how to tell you. Give them permission to share their thoughts. (Hint: You'll want to select your "style council" carefully, both for their awareness of personal style and their own diplomacy and tact.)
3. Move your clothes around. Sometimes it's hard to separate the wheat from the chaff. It can help to select a handful -- five at most -- of your favorite pieces, be they clothing or accessories. What do you love about how they make you look? The color, perhaps, or the type of neckline? See if you can isolate some qualities you can then use to help you refine your own personal style. (You can also do this exercise using things you DON'T like.)
Still not sure what defines YOUR signature style? If you need help finding your inner style adjectives and making them blossom through your personal style, I'm just a phone call or email away.

Ketura recommends . . .
|
|
. . . Fake fur (for real!) If you've been shopping at all in the past couple months, you already know that fake fur -- sorry, that's FAUX fur -- is huge right now. I love it! It's current without being other-the-top trendy. And a vest like this one will bring your jeans or black leggings and tunic right into Fall/Winter 2009. Give it a try!
You might find something you like here or here. Or search eBay or hit your favorite consignment or thrift store for other options.
Happy hunting!
