6 ways to get out of a rut

Greetings!

Well, nothing like a cold snap -- and I do mean COLD -- to put my wardrobe plans into high gear! We went from balmy to brrrrrr last week, but luckily I was prepared, having started to get those sweaters out a few weeks ago.

KP headshotAnd good thing, too, because leaf season is well underway. I love to watch as the leaves turn, and I find huge inspiration in the color combinations Fall brings. How about pairing mustard and eggplant? Or a rich green with rust? Can you take a look at your wardrobe and find any new, unexpected combinations?

And are you ready for the season, linen dresses and shorts all packed away? Maybe you've got them still in your closet, or you've gone the other direction, already stressing out about what to cook -- and wear -- for Thanksgiving! I know I'm thinking about that, plus how to dress for the various gatherings coming my way in the next couple months. (Hint: This year, it's all about the accessories!) What's on YOUR mind, style-wise? I'd love to hear about it!

And if you're thinking you'd like to get out of a rut -- or just need a style tune-up -- feel free to ask about our services. There's lots of info packed into the new FAQs page of my website, or you can visit the Services page to find out how we could best help you. (Or visit the newsletter archives and sign up to get my blog via email.)

Wishing you a warm and cozy Fall season!

Warmly,

Ketura

Getting out of a rut
6 ways to bring your style forward

Do you wonder if people think you're older than you are, or just stuck in some indiscernible time warp? Although some pieces in your wardrobe may be really great, others may need a little updating.

Here are six ways to get out of that rut:

Updating staples
An easy way to shed some years is with your T-shirts. Trade in the too-short Ts, the been-through-the-dryer-too-many-times Ts, and the low-quality cotton ones. Swap them for T-shirts that are longer and made from a smoother, finer knit. This update alone will make you feel and look more current. (And limit yourself to one or two of those T-shirts has-beens for when you need to wash the car or work in your yard.)

I hear this SO often: "I have no style!" Is that because your daily look is conservative and too plain (restricted to classic sweater sets and dark trousers, for instance)?

No doubt about it, YOU'RE interesting, and you want to everyone to know it, right? To do so, you'll need to add interest to your outfit, with details like updated eyeglass lenses, bolder jewelry, a fresh haircut, a new scarf or belt, and details like ruching, draping, asymmetry, unusual buttons or finishes, and even sequins and metallic thread. (Yes, you can wear those last two during the day!)

Play with color
Enough with the layered neutrals! Instead, trying playing with color. For inspiration, look around you at the beautiful fall colors. If you're wearing a neutral-color cardigan, wear a bold-color blouse underneath or a leopard-print cardigan over a neutral-color blouse. Add color in gloves, brooches, or bags. And if you're not keen on color, go for texture. Add a ruffled blouse under a jacket with clean lines. Check out some pleating details in dress shirts or skirts.

Not your old, tired jeans
Are you stuck in a jeans rut? If you're wearing jeans bought longer than two years ago, chances are it's time for an update. (And that's even more true if your jeans don't have belt loops, a zipper, or front pockets!) A great pair of jeans is a perfect way to add great style and versatility to your wardrobe. Try jeans on until you find the ones complement your shape.

Favor fashionable and comfortable shoes
Are your feet getting the attention they deserve? Have you spoiled them with tennis shoes and clogs? There are more attractive solutions out there! Shoe designers have gotten wise to the idea that we don't necessarily love walking in heels all day and have put effort into creating flats, heels and boots that feel nearly as comfy as sneakers but are much more stylish. Try some of these designers: Donald Pliner, Taryn Rose, Sofft, ECCO, Cole Haan, Re-Mix Vintage, Aquatalia, Paul Green, and Dansko.

Express yourself
Above all, pay attention to what you want your outfit to say about yourself. Instead of outdated or tired, you probably want to be described with more adjectives like sophisticated, stylish, and interesting.

. . . Pack this!

Pack This! fr Container StoreGoing somewhere?

If you're like many people, you're probably planning a trip for sometime before the end of 2009.

How can you make sure to avoid stressing out about packing, so you end up taking what you need to be your most stylish? (Hint: Don't start at 10 p.m. the night before you leave!)

This checklist from the Container Store can help. Or email me for my own (much simpler!) packing checklist.
