Basic but not boring
The cost of clothing clutter
October 6, 2009
Greetings!

Fall is finally here! I see leaves falling from the tree outside my window and pumpkins on the steps of the house across the street. Maybe it's because I grew up in Texas, which has only two seasons, but whatever the reason, I think this may be my favorite time of year. And this fall in particular, I'm plotting my purchases with distinct pleasure -- belts, layers, purple, ruffles -- what's not to love?!

Ketura head shotPerhaps best of all was hauling downstairs my boxes of fall/winter clothing. I'm hoping to unearth some treasures I've forgotten about, because in the past couple weeks I've done some serious decluttering in my closet. I felt I was spending too much time rejecting the same few things every morning (and hating that I end up rushing as a result). Wonder what your own clutter is costing you? Read on to find out.

Recently I've heard over and over from friends and clients that they are just not shopping. But really, who doesn't need a little updating? I have just the solution for you: my upcoming accessories workshop, "Make It Your Own," where I'll show you exactly how much mileage you can get with from just a few inexpensive accessories. You'll have plenty chance to experiment, give and get constructive criticism from other participants, and get ideas for where to go to fill out your own accessories wardrobe! (I'll send more details soon, but make sure to mark your calendar now for October 20 at 7:30 p.m.)

And make sure to check my website, the Wardrobe Workshop, where you can visit the newsletter archives and sign up to get my blog via email. And I hope you'll send me an email letting me know what's on YOUR mind this fall -- I always love hearing from you!

Warmly,

Ketura

Basic but not boring
The crucial pieces that round out your wardrobe

I hear this from clients all the time: "I have no basics!" They want or feel they need some basic article of clothing, like a black T-shirt, to use as a layering piece.

Gap silk ruffle blouseBut what I've started to realize is that it's not the basics they lack so much as all the other stuff, the special, unique, wonderful pieces of clothing and accessories that will give her the fabulous personal style she wants. So, for instance, rather than hunt down yet another cardigan, maybe she should be looking for an embellished wrap of some sort.

Or, let's say she really wants another cardigan. How about something special, with unusual buttons or trim at the placket or around the collar or a nubby texture? As my friend A. says, basics don't have to be boring! A ivory tank embellished with sequins will work nicely with that jacket and skirt just as well as a plain silk one. Or this Robert Rodriguez cashmere cocoon sweater would be unusual and stylish with a pair of skinny jeans, more so than a traditional crewneck version.

So next time you're out shopping, instead of buying a new one of your go-to piece (be it black slacks or a brown cardigan), try to find one that has something special about it: ruching, a drawstring, sequins or embroidery, or asymmetrical draping. You'll be taking a big step in the direction of easy, fabulous personal style.
The cost of clutter
What are those unwanted clothes costing you?

Can we put a price tag on clutter? Yes, we can!

Consider these costs:

Do you invest in storage to keep the clothes that won't fit in your closet?
Price: $1200 to $2600 per year

Have you remodeled your closet, adding floor-to-ceiling storage in order to hold more stuff you never wear?
Price: $1000 to $15,000

Have you lost track of what you own so you ended up buying it .... again?
Price: hundreds (or thousands) of dollars

Do you have so many clothes and accessories in your closet that you lose track of them and never wear them? Try adding up the prices on those dangling hang tags -- how much money have you spent on clothes, shoes and other stuff you never wear?
Price: hundreds, possibly thousands of dollars

Have you turned down the chance to join a friend for a special event because even though you have a closet full of clothes, you can't find anything to wear? Have you been late to an important meeting because you couldn't find the piece of clothing you needed for the outfit you planned to wear?
Price: Missing out on good times, great memories and confidence

Did you know there's another way to tackle clutter? Getting help to weed out what doesn't serve you anymore and maximize the investment you've already made makes great sense. If it were easy to do alone, we'd all have done it ourselves. (Did you know most image consultants get this kind of help, too?) So call today .... You'll start to feel great about your wardrobe, and love and use the things already sitting in your closet.
