Why do you work so hard to offer programs and great benefits to your employees and new recruits? Your employees represent your single most competitive advantage. According to the article "HR is Dead: Long Live Employee Experience", written by Razor Suleman, CEO and Founder of I Love Rewards and Kris Dunn, CHRO of Kinetix & Founder of Fistful of Talent, "...HR professionals must evolve into being the best thinkers in the company about the human and organization side of the business. The human side of the business is a key source of competitive advantage."
HR needs to shift from a transactional to a strategic position focused on engaging employees and the total Employee Experience. The main priority of organizations should be to recruit, retain and inspire their people. Engaged employees are fundamental to business success, pushing HR to evolve again, this time to the Employee Experience.
The differences between HR and the Employee Experience are:
Human Resources:
- Focused on transactions & administration
- Reports to CFO
- Annual performance Evaluations
- Traditional service awards
- Handbook & policies
Employee Experience:
- Focused on employee engagement & talent management
- Reports to CEO
- Real-time feedback
- Performance based recognition
- Core values & corporate culture
What skills are needed to foster an Employee Experience culture?
Excellent lobbying skills, not only with C-level executives, but with managers across the company. The employee must be at the center of the company strategy for success. An Employee Experience professional must aggressively market their talent internally and externally, use social media, video, print, and other types of promotional strategies. Expect pushback. Creating an Employee Experience culture is good for the company, but is not necessarily easy.
It's time to leave transactional HR behind and focus on building and implementing strategic initiatives, cultivating talent through career development, and increasing employee engagement to drive business growth and success.
