Mark Peterson Receives National Financial Services Champion Award
SBA Administrator Karen Mills and Mark Peterson

In May, Bridgeway Capital's president Mark Peterson won the SBA Financial Services Champion of the Year award on the district, regional and national levels -- quite an honor!  Nominated by Mary McKinney, Director of Duquesne University SBDC, the award was based on helping small businesses obtain financing, encouragement of the flow of investment capital to small firms, advocacy, and other significant contributions.

Mark was recognized during National Small Business Week in Washington, D.C., and received the national award from SBA Administrator Karen Mills at the Champion's Gala.  National Small Business Week continued with the Pittsburgh District Luncheon, where Mark received the local award from SBA District Director Carl Knoblock.
"This award is very special because it's made possible by the hard work of the Bridgeway Capital staff and most importantly, our borrowers," said Mark.  "Our borrowers are enthusiastic entrepreneurs that persevere through the toughest of times.  We endeavor to meet needs, and they continue to grow the economy."

Kevin Stecko, founder of online t-shirt company 80sTees.com, was named the SBA Small Business Person of the Year on the state level. Stecko (right) started the company 10 years ago and operates out of a warehouse in Westmoreland County.  Bridgeway Capital provided a 504 loan for 80sTees. Today, the company has nearly 30 employees and sells t-shirts with themes from movies, cartoons, television shows, video games, comic books and more.  Watch Stecko's interview on PCNC's "Our Region's Business."

It's graduation season, and two of Bridgeway Capital's borrowers are celebrating graduations this week.  PHASE 4 Learning Center has 219 students graduating -- 56 percent have chosen to go to college or post-secondary training, 34 percent are entering the job market, and 10 percent are serving their country in the military.  PHASE 4 provides education for at-risk youth that focuses on their academic, social, behavioral and future needs, enabling them to stay in school and graduate.

City HighCity High Charter School, located in downtown Pittsburgh, has 113 students graduating -- 68 percent were accepted into a 4-year college or university, and 29 percent plan to attend a 2-year or technical training program.  Also, 126 seniors have Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) certifications.  City High Charter School provides education for students in grades 9 - 12, and offers students a technology-infused environment, professional development strategy, and career preparation in addition to typical high school classes.

Congratulations Class of 2010!

Winners Circle
Bridgeway Capital was the recipient of this year's Entrepreneurial Excellence award, which recognizes advocacy in the growth and success of women-owned businesses, and creativity in promoting and supporting women entrepreneurs to be valuable contributors (specifically, in Westmoreland County).  Angel Marschik, our senior loan officer, has spent considerable time supporting women-owned businesses in and around Westmoreland County.  Her efforts helped Bridgeway Capital win this award, and are a great reflection of our commitment to economic growth.

Presented by Seton Hill University's E-Magnify women's business center, this awards program and event seeks to recognize community leaders who inspire others. These awards include the prestigious ATHENA AwardŽ, the Seton Hill University Entrepreneurial Excellence Award, the Award for Community Service and the YWCA Rising Star Award.
