Greetings!
Tuesday evening, October 9th, Mayor Doyle, the Beaverton City Council and myself had the pleasure of recognizing this quarter's Beaverton4Business Award recipients. Since 2009, we've sought to recognize dynamic business either headquartered here or with operations in Beaverton that are contributing to growing the local economy, providing jobs for our citizens and raising the quality of life in our community.
Congratulations to Agilyx, Art on Broadway, and Far West Fibers.
Using proprietary technology, Agilyx reduces plastic waste normally destined for landfills, produces refinery-ready crude oil, and creates local green jobs with its small-scale, distributed waste management and energy production approach.
Agilyx employs 60 people full-time, 40 of those in Beaverton, and expects to roughly double its workforce over the next 12-18 months.
Envisioned as a permanent location for local artists to display their work, Art on Broadway celebrates its second anniversary this month. Its owners, Donna Sanson & Roberta Cohen, feel it represents the kind of business, the style, and the market appeal that is forward-thinking for Beaverton's downtown future. Both Donna and Roberta have been instrumental in making Beaverton First Friday's a success this past season for the Beaverton Downtown Association through their amazing efforts on the Promotions Committee.
Over 35 years old, today there are four Far West Fibers facilities in the Portland metro area. The company has new plants in Beaverton, Hillsboro and Portland. Overall they employ a total of 150 people. Seven managers co-own Far West....a company that now processes 250,000 tons of recyclables annually. Far West recycles paper, cardboard, plastic, glass, carpet padding and metal...curbside or drop-off. And now will take your Styrofoam - just in time for the holidays!

Representing Business to Government...
Our Business Advocacy Council focuses on issues that directly impact businesses that most owners/managers do not have time to stay on top of but count on the Chamber to do so and be their voice.
At September's BAC meeting, the council voted to Oppose Measure 85.
According to the 2012 Oregon Voter's Pamphlet, this measure, if passed will "Amends Constitution: Allocates corporate income/excise tax "kicker" refund to additionally fund K through 12 public education." The Council did not discern that re-allocated money would go to schools, as might be assumed, since the bill language says the funds are to go to the broadly defined "K through 12 public education." The Council also expressed concern about the continuing efforts to amend the Oregon constitution and questioned if this measure warranted such an action.
Your Chamber is an advocate for ComprehensiveTax Reform and believes the entire structure must be examined and looked at to provide a viable long-term solution to our school funding issues. The board of directors discussed the BAC's decision at their meeting this Wednesday expressly stated that the "bandaid" approach is not the way to go - but comprehensive tax reform is necessary and long-overdue. The Corporate Kicker should be looked at as well as the Individual Kicker and all other sources.
NEXT MEETING: November 1st
TOPIC - TBA Lobby floor conference room.
We meet monthly on the first Thursday at 7:30am - 8:30am in our down stairs conference room. Feel free to contact Lorraine if you have any questions. We'd love to have you.
All Business Advocacy Council Meetings are open to all members (appointed or not!). If you "get" the connection between monitoring regulations, ensuring business has input at the table on issues such as transportation, taxation and more...you should come and participate. All ideas and opinions are welcome.

Cawood Carpet Cleaning
My husband and I went on our honeymoon for a week. When we returned we discovered our white carpet had several stains. Our teenagers had a few guests over ...... it was time to call John at Cawood Carpet Cleaning. He came out that week and made our carpet fresh and new looking again. He was quick, good, and affordable. Great job! - Sue Ragsdale

Promoting Community...
Your Chamber is a Lead & Support Partner
Uberthons announces the Oregon Turkeython to be held on Thanksgiving Morning at Beaverton Town Square. The family running event includes 5k, 10k, 1k, and ½ k races. The races are professionally timed by Uberthons using overhead RFID antennas that read chips attached to racing bibs. Race results are posted on the Internet as the runners and walkers cross the finish line. Famous Footwear is the title sponsor of the event. Other sponsors include Sports Authority, Oregon Health Clubs, The Fitness Studio, Acceleration Sports Medicine, Oroweat, Courtyard Marriott, Dickie Jo's, Mucho Gusto, and Yo My My Frozen Yogurt. The Turkeython comes to Beaverton for this 2nd annual event. All course roads will be closed and well marked. Santa and Mrs. Claus will be present - and members of the Portland's Singing Christmas Tree will introduce the holiday season to Beaverton as they perform before the start of the race. A special recognition will be made to our Veterans.
The event benefits non-profit organizations including Westside Police Activities League, Portland Rescue Mission, Portland's Singing Christmas Tree, SHOC Foundation, Camp to Belong NW, Camp Rosenbaum, Tigard Community Back Pack Program, Bradley Angle, and Project Linus.
All Beaverton Area Chamber of Commerce members are invited to participate in the event by providing discount coupons, publicizing the event, volunteering as event directors, or participating as a company team in the running events.
While the Oregon Turkeython does not yet rival the Dallas, Texas or Sacramento, CA Thanksgiving runs, which each have over 26,000 participants, the Turkeython will surely grow and be a popular holiday event in downtown Beaverton for years to come.
If you are interested in promoting your business, or in helping with the event, review the webpage at http://www.uberthons.com/turkeython-sponsors and email uberthons@gmail.com, or call 503-516-6998. The event website is www.turkeython.com, and the event facebook page is www.facebook.com/oregonturkeython.
