Robert S. Gailey, PhD, PT (Associate Professor) has been at the University of Miami School of Medicine, Department of Physical Therapy for over 23 years. He also has a joint appointment as a Health Science Researcher with Miami Veterans Affairs Medical Center and is the Director of the Functional Outcomes Research and Evaluation Center.
His doctorate in prosthetics was received from the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, Scotland where he developed the Amputee Mobility Predictor, an objective measure of amputee function. He has worked in the hospital acute care and rehabilitation settings as well as private practice during his 28 years as a physical therapist. He has lectured extensively around the world on a wide variety of topics related to orthopedics, prosthetics and sports medicine for athletes with disabilities.
He has authored over 50 publications and has continued research efforts directed toward: amputee rehabilitation, the biomechanics and metabolic cost of prosthetic gait, functional assessment and athletic pursuits of the amputee as well as other athletes with disabilities across the life span. He has worked as a special advisor to the Department of Defense with the development of the military amputee rehabilitation program. He remains active with many organizations including the Amputee Coalition of America and the American Physical Therapy Association.
