Carol McDonald, Synod Co-Executive

   Possibilities for the Heartland

by Carol McDonald

Synod Executive

At its July 21, 2012, stated meeting, the Synod of Lincoln Trails will begin a year-long emphasis on the theme "Possibilities for the Heartland." This emphasis and theme have been chosen and developed by the Synod's Leadership Team (Moderator, Vice Moderator, Moderators of Standing Commmittee, and staff). Each commissioner will receive a copy of The Art of Possibility by Benjamin and Rosamund Zander - to read before the October, 2012, overnight meeting.

On July 21 we will:

  • view "The Art of Possibility" video and begin our conversation
  • hear four different voices "speaking possibility"
  • hear about the 3-Synod "Heartland Regional Resource Network" which is in its embryonic stage of possibility
  • recognize officially the "big sexy mission project" of the Heartland Regional Network: JUST.GOOD.FOOD.

Also on July 21, we will hear and talk about actions taken by the 220th General Assembly which begins in just hours. Uncertainty about synods' futures is exactly why the leadership team has chose the them of possbilities for our work together in the months to come. We will be inviting presbytery staff and leaders to join in the conversation and we look forward to exploring, discovering, and speaking possibility to this region of the PC(U.SA.) - and even to the whole church

Stay tuned for the conversation is just beginning! And to God be the glory!

'Just.Good.Food' LOOKS FOR CONGREGATIONS WITH GARDENS

The upper Midwest is an abundant source of food, but oftentimes the abundance overshadows the poverty and hunger that exist in this land of bounty. Synods of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) across the upper Midwest are developing a common mission initiative called "Just.Good.Food." that will address the issue of hunger. The initiative will help individual congregations collaborate with local organizations by growing and distributing food to those who do not have enough. Sarah Moore-Nokes, associate executive presbyter of Winnebago Presbytery, is heading up the project and searchiing for congregations to help pilot the effort. If your congregation would like to participate in this developing mission, please contact Sarah Moore-Nokes, associate executive presbyter in Winnebago Presbytery, at sarah@winnebagopresbytery.org, or Duane Sweep, associate for communications in the Synod of Lakes and Prairies, at dsweep@lakesandprairies.org. A more complete description of the project can be found at "hunger."

The Final Leg

To the pastors and congregations of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.),

"Are we there yet?" the children call out on a cross-country trip. Finally, in the last leg of the journey, the parent can reply, "Not long now!"

It's not long now until the start of the 220th General Assembly (2012) of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) in Pittsburgh, Pa. Cindy Bolbach, Moderator of the 219th General Assembly (2010), will convene the opening session on Saturday,

June 30.

It's not long now until hundreds of volunteers from Pittsburgh Presbytery and beyond will meet and greet visitors, sharing their part of the Presbyterian family with warmth, grace, and genuine excitement.

Non-Anxious Moderator Seeks Same for GA220

Bolbach: 'Not Sure we can absorb anything that's another huge change'

by Jerry L. Van Marter and Bethany Furkin

Presbyterian News Service

Louisville -- With the passage of a new form of government and new ordination standards, the 219th General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) did a lot - and commissioners at this summer's 220th Assembly would be wise to use this meeting to take stock of the denomination, said Cynthia Bolbach, outgoing moderator.

Bolbach spoke with the Presbyterian News Service June 26, during a break from chemotherapy treatments she is receiving for cancer. "I've been so uplifted by the outpouring of prayers by so many people," she said, adding that she will mention her illness during her June 30 sermon during opening worship at the Assembly. "I'm astonished at how many people really care."
