"Synod School Brought Me Closer to God"
Former Student Expresses Thanks for Synod School
As a child and young adult, Brian Moles spent 12 happy summers at Lincoln Trails Synod School. As part of a series of letters he's writing to people and organizations who have had a positive influence on him, Brian recently sent a letter to the Lincoln Trails offices. He reminisced about the summer gatherings held at Hanover College, and described the many benefits he realized from his experiences both then and now. For the past five years, I have served as a volunteer youth advisor at the churches I have attended (Central Pres., Terre Haute, IN & Second Pres., Nashville, TN). I have led and planned weekly youth fellowship, taken groups on mission trips, and to Montreat Youth Conference and Presbyterian Youth Trienniums. Without my Synod School experience, I'm not sure I would be capable of performing the work I do with these youth, and certainly not as well as I do. Thank you for helping me find something I am truly passionate about.Read the rest of Brian's letter on his blog. Today, the Synod of Lincoln Trails helps support Covenant Gathering, an annual synod school held at Michindoh Conference Center in Hillsdale, Michigan. This summer's session is July 3-8. From the Synod Executive
Looking Back, Looking Forward
by Carol McDonald The synod will meet for the first time in 2011 on Friday, Jan. 28, at First Presbyterian Church in Urbana, Ill. This first meeting is always an exercise both in looking back and in looking forward. We will say thank-you and farewell to our 2010 moderator, the Rev. Eddie Knox, Jr., of Chicago Presbytery, who has blessed us with leadership both deeply spiritual and care-fully practical. We will look back at programs completed. We will review year-end financial statements.
But we will also look forward. We will install the Rev. Christina Berry of Blackhawk Presbytery as our 2011 moderator. We will install the Rev. Douglas Tracy as our stated clerk, class of 2012. We will welcome newly elected commissioners. Standing committees will think about the work stretching before them in 2011. And we will hear from, and talk with, members of the synod's Discernment Team.
But most of all, we will be in community - a community of those who love Christ's church and who value one another as sisters and brothers in ministry. We will worship God and celebrate God's goodness to us. We will share the bread of life and the cup of salvation. We will build community around the coffee and lunch tables. And as we talk and think, as we eat and laugh and make decisions together, we will be nourished for the work of Christ's church in our communities and in our presbyteries.
Have you ever thought about being a commissioner to the Synod of Lincoln Trails? You just might want to give it a try!

PC(USA) Names Lincoln Trails Members to Special Committees
Elder Cynthia Bolbach, moderator of the 219th General Assembly (2010) of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) has appointed the members of the final two special committees called for by last summer's assembly, including several members from presbyteries in the Synod of Lincoln Trails. The formation of both groups grew out of recommendations to the assembly by the Advocacy Committee for Racial Ethnic Concerns. Both committees are expected to bring reports to the next General Assembly in 2012. Named to the Special Committee to Study the Nature of the Church for the 21st Century were: the Rev. SanDawna Gaulman Ashley, Elder Joseph Lemuel Morrow and Deacon Richard Pak, all from Chicago Presbytery. Named to the Task Force to Study Racial Ethnic and New Immigrant Church Growth were: Sung Yeon Choi-Morrow (Chicago Presbytery), Elder Ann Kelson (Great Rivers Presbytery) and the Rev. Eddie L. Knox, Jr. (Chicago Presbytery). Knox is moderator of the Synod of Lincoln Trails, class of 2010. Read more about these two special PC(USA) committees. |
