Rushville Congregation Organizes "Be The Match" Event

by Felipe N. Martinez, Associate Executive Presbyter, Whitewater Valley Presbytery

Trinity Presbyterian Church in Rushville, Indiana, is an example of how a congregation's involvement in mission begins with a personal story.  Ashley Spurlin, a twenty-five year-old Rushville resident, was scheduled for a bone marrow transplant in September. Her story touched the heart of her rural community, and especially of Trinity pastor Mick Saunders, who began to ask the question: "How can the church be supportive?"

On August 27, Trinity partnered with a local nursing home to host "Be The Match," an awareness-raising event at which 18 volunteers stepped up to become part of the National Bone Marrow Registry. The event was also in memory of Edwin Rogers, a Trinity member who recently passed away from leukemia. His widow, Betty, a long-time employee of the partnering nursing home, was present at the event and covered the registration fee for two of the volunteers. Another smaller congregation dreaming big!
