Synod Elects New Moderator and Vice Moderator at January Meeting

Eddie Knox, minister commissioner from the Presbytery of Chicago, and Katherine Rieder, minister commissioner from the Presbytery of Whitewater Valley, were installed as the synod's new moderator and vice moderator during the January 23 synod meeting, held in Philo, Ill. Knox served as vice moderator in 2009.

The synod also welcomed new commissioners Marian DeWall and Johanna Sommers, Blackhawk Presbytery; Jennifer Burns Lewis and Jack Wilson, Chicago Presbytery; Maura McGrath Nagle, Great Rivers Presbytery; Mike Beaver, Ohio Valley Presbytery; Laura Johnston and John Swick, Southeastern Illinois Presbytery and Cheryl Montgomery, Whitewater Valley Presbytery. Re-elected commissioners are Bruce Haapalainen, Wabash Valley Presbytery and Veltri Taylor, Ohio Valley Presbytery.

Haiti Report
Help is On the Way - What is Needed, What is Not


Presbyterian Disaster Assistance continues to respond in Haiti. As of yesterday (January 28, 2010), in addition to a key expert being assigned to Haiti to carry out assessments, $409,000 has been sent to assist with emergency needs. Presbyterian Disaster Assistance is responding as a member of the ACT Alliance (ACT.)

The response in Haiti is still in the relatively early phase of emergency relief. The most effective way to respond is through financial support. PDA is not requesting material aid, other than the preparation of Gift of the Heart hygiene and baby kits, to replenish the supply after more than 35,000 kits have been directed to Haiti. A Workshop for Commissioned Lay Pastors Presented by the Synod of Lincoln Trails
