Abundance and Anxiety
by John Van Nuys, Pastor, Wabash Avenue Presbyterian Church, Crawfordsville, Indiana Thanks to a 2006 Lilly Endowment Sabbatical Grant, I got to fulfill a childhood dream of going to the Serengeti in Kenya and Tanzania. I think about that trip often - especially when reading all the current headlines of doom and gloom.
Studying economics in college, I learned that the foundational truth of economics is scarcity: There is only so much; all is determined by supply and demand. Studying theology in seminary, I learned that the foundational truth of God is abundance: God loves us eternally - God supplies our every need - lavishly, abundantly, until our cups runneth over.
Well, which is it?

Sabbath Reflections - Part I
by Carol McDonald, Co-Executive, Synod of Lincoln Trails
My mother died almost two years ago. Since that time I have been
attempting to make a trip to west Texas so that some of her ashes could
be placed in the Alpine, Texas, cemetery where three of her brothers
are buried. The Sabbath opportunity provided to me by the Synod of
Lincoln Trails gave me just the time I needed.
Even before my mother's death, I was fascinated by her growing-up years
in Wichita Falls, Texas. I knew that her family was poor; they lived
with their grandmother; and her mother, my grandmother, died when my
mother was 15 years old. I knew it was at Floral Heights Presbyterian
Church that she became a committed Christian and I knew that my
grandmother was extremely active in the women's organization of the
church. This trip seemed like a great time to do some cemetery
"crawling." From my late uncle's exhaustive genealogical work, I
discovered the name of the cemetery in Wichita Falls where my
grandmother is buried. The amazing Internet provided me all the
information I needed - even a map - to locate her grave.
