Sabbath Time
I gave myself some time to listen to and enjoy God

In early 2008 the Standing Committee on Personnel of the Synod of
Lincoln Trails pushed my co-executive colleague, Carol McDonald, and me
to schedule six weeks of time for a mini-sabbatical within the next
calendar year. They had determined that we were not using our
continuing education or vacation time and while we could talk about
Sabbath, we were not practicing it. My time was scheduled for the
Monday before Thanksgiving through January 5, 2009. What follows is my
report/reflection on that time.
I begin by thanking the Standing Committee on Personnel of the Synod of
Lincoln Trails as a group and individually for being stubborn about the
need for this time. I thank the commissioners of the synod for allowing
this time "off" to be a priority. The perception and tenacity of the
standing committee and synod allowed me to experience things I would
never have experience left to my own devices. I called this time
"Sabbath time" because I learned I was not giving myself enough time to
experience the holy. I thought experiencing the holy happened in holy
places. When I saw Sabbath as time it became clear my time allocation
was out of balance and had been for quite some time.
