Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) Holds General Assembly
The 218th General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) will be held June 21-28, 2008, in San Jose, Calif. The General Assembly is the highest governing body of the denomination and is representative of the unity of our congregations, sessions, presbyteries, and synods. Many important issues will be considered by commissioners and advisory delegates as they seek to discern and to represent the will of Christ for the PC(USA).
Before each General Assembly, the Stated Clerk of the General Assembly shares what he considers to be the top ten issues coming to the assembly, based primarily on overtures that have been submitted and his travels and conversations with Presbyterians across the church. Read the clerk's non-prioritized list for 2008.
Commissioners and advisory delegates to the 218th General Assembly will elect a moderator the first day of the Assembly. To date, four individuals are standing for moderator. A new stated clerk of the General Assembly will also be elected.
Nearly 1,000 items of business to be considered by the Assembly will be processed by 17 assembly committees. Each committee will have a moderator and vice-moderator - chosen by 217th General Assembly Moderator Joan Gray from the ranks of the 852 elected commissioners to the Assembly - plus a committee assistant and a parliamentarian/recorder appointed by General Assembly Stated Clerk Clifton Kirkpatrick.
Two commissioners from the Synod of Lincoln Trails will staff assembly committees: the Rev. Nancy Kahaian, Wabash Valley Presbytery, will moderate the Peacemaking and International Issues committee and the Rev. Sue Krummel, Great Rivers Presbytery, will be the assistant for the Church Orders and Ministry committee.

$3K Grants Available To Support Peacemaking Ministries
The synod's Standing Committee on Leadership Development invites church sessions, clusters of churches, presbytery
councils, presbytery social justice committees or public ministry committees to discern how you are being challenged to share God's healing and peace and to work in the world to build a culture of peace and nonviolence for all God's creation. Do you dream of a ministry that promotes
- worship
- prayer and Bible study
- peacemaking in families and community living
- community ministries
- study and response to global issues
- global security
- making peace with the earth
Or perhaps you already have such a ministry.
This one-year program will award grants up to $3000 to applicants chosen by the committee. Click here for more information and a grant application. Deadline to apply is July 9, 2008.

27 Self-Help Projects Funded SDOP disburses $671,604 at home and in the Dominican Republic
The Presbyterian Committee on the Self-Development of People (SDOP) has approved grants totaling $671,604 to 27 self-help projects in the United States and the Dominican Republic, including one from the Synod of Lincoln Trails.
In our synod, the Lights of the Round Table, Chicago, Ill., received $20,000 for a group of recovering addicts and alcoholics who seek to establish a coffee house and sober social club as a business for themselves.
The national SDOP enables members and non-members of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) to form partnerships with oppressed and disadvantaged people in order to help them achieve self-sufficiency. SDOP is currently focusing significant funding on projects in the Dominican Republic under a three-year pilot program that seeks to strengthen partnerships in specific regions of the world.
The money is from the One Great Hour of Sharing offering.
